If this is referring to the Fireball "jets only" question, Blackbirdfan answered at the top of page 2 the Ryan's props were feathered and running jets only. In going back to all of the Fireball pics, it appears to me the props were feathered in all of the shots.

I was answering to the gate guard A-4 question, which survived its hazardous naval service only to be attacked by the wind and a crane while on gate guard duty!

Alameda is a neat old base to drive around. Tons of history.

Thanks SD89, I went thru twice and missed it...FOG syndrome. F-ing Old Guy eyes. I was TDY at Alameda the last 2 months of my Navy time in '77 with Coral Sea. I was always at sea or berthed on the ship, so I don't recall the Scooter gate guard.

Years ago I recall reading one of our notable aviation photographers was base at Alameda during WW2 and recalled one section there filled with Curtiss SO3C Seamews. Apparently when they were withdrawn from service they were gathered there before being sent south to become target drones. His name escapes me tho...the FOG is thick today.

When WWII ended, my father was stationed there at Alameda as a machinist mate E-5 and he said that L-4 cubs new in crate started disappearing out of the Store lockers warehouse. The Yeoman in charge was furious as someone had tampered with the inventory list and made it look like they were all transfers. In reality, it probably was an officer somewhere "upstairs" that was stealing or trading them. He never said to me if anyone every got caught, but the war was over and I guess everyone could careless-except the Yeoman.

Anybody have any idea where it was taken?

It is Alameda, but the picture was taken before the southern, outer, pier was constructed. The boat house (still in use) at the top of the picture, the rounded pier and the rip/rap jetty line up perfectly, and are visible on a modern google map image. Looking at a modern map, the pier where the picture where the Yorktown was would now be at the end of W Ticondergoa Ave. It is now the middle pier, but was the outer pier at the time of that photo.

The Southern pier was constructed later, and the land was filled in a bit at Alameda point. You can see how the the area was filld in around old pier in the Yorktown picture. The newer southern pier (on the appropriately named W Hornet Ave) is where the museum Hornet is currently moored.

Thanks for the correction, didn't realize there ws an additional pier there at one time.
