I recently saw some photos from Dave Tallichet's storage facility at Barstow - Daggett back in 1978, and in one of them there was a Sovjet painted P-39 sitting in the background. At first I wondered if the CAF Cobra was present in the yard, but photos shot at Airsho' 78 two weeks prior show a 39 with somewhat different markings. Does anyone know which Cobra this was, as it was complete, and not a project like the rest of the PNG stuff Tallichet got.

Which one he has own a number of them. The thing that David learned about that airplane is that if you can not line up the drive shafts per the book that's the end of airplane.

When I look at the way I wrote this, I guess what I'm asking does not come out too clearly. geek Never write late at night...

The question is this; The P-39 shot at Barstow is a complete aircraft painted in Sovjet AF colors, and I have never been aware that Tallichet had a 39 that was complete, sitting on its gear with prop and everything back in Oct. 1978. I am fully aware of the wrecks that came from PNG, but this is not a derelict.

At first I thought it was the CAF's P-39 N6968, but photos of that aircraft at Airsho' 78 only weeks before (and in later years) shows it doesn't look quite the same. So which of MARC/ YAF's Airacobras was this?

Just a WAG based on Goodall's Lists but I would say the 2 most likely candidates would be 42-4949 or 44-3908.

I'am sorry if I came off a little curt with last post to your P39 question. David has so many airplanes over the years its all but impossible to kept track of them all. Someone should do a book on him.

My guess is 42-20000 now at March or the one that was under restoration at Tulsa (42-8740?).

Back in the early 90's I was helping restore one of Tallichet's B-25 at Hanscom AFB in Mass.
One day a flatbed showed up with a glass nose to replace our gun nose.
There was also a derelict aircraft on it, which at first I thought was a P-51.
To my disappointment (sorry I was young and dumb) it turned out to be a P-39.
Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures, and now I wonder what happeded to it.
Didn't realize Tallichet was so into P-39 until recently, I mean for Christ sakes; he had a B-17... :P

I always just assumed that this one came out of PNG in '74 with the others. Does anyone have a good idea of the condition that it's in? Is it just a shell or is it a reasonable project for POF to put back in the air down the road?

Sorry for the hijack. Always liked the Airacobra.

While on the subject of aircraft recovered from New Guineaby Tallichet, does anyone have any info on the whereabouts of P-40N 42-105951? The last info I found which was a few years old said that the wings were in New Zealand while the fuselage was at Chino. I live near Chino and have seen MARCs storage yard but there doesn't seem to be a P-40 fuselage there.

Thanks for the heads up on book about David T. Col. I wonder when it might be out and about. I know Scott Royce was writing his own book on his life in aviation. Have you heard anything on him lately. Ths again.

Is this the P-39 that was displayed as an "as found" crashed wreck at Chino about 20 years ago? (kicking myself for not writing down the serial at the time)

About 20 years ago in the early 90's I got real close and personal with a heap of P-39 fuselage over at the ESAM at the same time his B-26, 40-1501, started restoration there. I think Dave's P-38, 44-27231, also spent some time there in that same timeframe. Unfortunately, I was a very young kid at the time and don't have any photos.
