The following lists of aircraft that were offered through the DOD Surplus Catelog venue. These military aircraft remains are essentually broken up scrap - not being offered as a possible flyer. I thought maybe those WIX members that are looking for a souvenir or are parts collectors may find the lists useable. For full explanation of subject, please refer to same title above, except use - 1970.

"Ten Photos total. Nine photos dated 12-4-74, C-97G and RB-57A depicted while waiting for sale to start in near future. I have included pics of an H-19, HU-16 'Katanga', and RF-84 which were at the Saginaw Museum, but not listed in sales. The 11 Mar 1975 sale was cancelled and aircraft relisted on 8 Apr 1975 list. That sale shows winning bidders. The last photo of RB-57A was taken at Selma Airport, Muncie IN of 21463 on 4-20-1981. As I recall, it had been demiled somewhat, but doesn't seem so in photo."

These were all USAF aircraft that had been loaned to the short-lived Michigan Military Air Museum in the early 1970s. When the museum closed in 1974, the aircraft were impounded and sold; some would even fly again (I've corrected some serials).

Good question. I found a topographical map that showed the location of the Selma airfield at 40.1880993, -85.2591355; the earliest aerial image (1994) shows a vague area that looks like it could have been a grass airstrip - but no RB-57. Today it's a plowed field.

OK - next we'll look at a LOT of helicopters... pop1

Back in A&P tech school in Milwaukee we had aircraft as well as individual components to learn from/work with (the pranged up L-19 is now a frequent visitor to Oshkosh!). There were many hydraulic components from a T-33. I later found 2 T-33's in a junk yard on the north side of the city. The both had the wings sawn off outside of the main gear, one still had the engine in it. Tried like heck to convince my parents to let me buy them and keep them in their back yard (I had an apartment at the time), but no luck.

I have listed the helicopter serial numbers on back of the 7 pics. I have included a rough sketch of storage yard with what info I could make out. The owner in Indiana sold some choppers to a customer in California and some went to a Jack Fetsko of Media, PA.

Dear Leon, Chris,

Can I save some of the 'copter' pictures? They won't be for financial gain. :D

I'm REALLY enjoying this thread. Looks at all those Piasecki's! It's an interesting place. Did most of these HUP's and H21's survive, minus the one Leon saved?

I've read that among the aircraft was a prototype OH-6...and after the museum closed the Michigan Sate Police got it and were going to try to make it airworthy (probably unlit they found out how much helicopter parts are).

Anyone know more about the museum and its aircraft?

Thank you, Leon. I really am enjoying these threads. It's great to actually see pictures of some of the planes listed. It's interesting where they end up, from one life to another.

I just want to show people where the HUP came from. Im working really hard to find people interested in helping me. :) And Im slowly buying some hauling gear for when the time comes to do some more airplane adventuring. :drink3:

I'm getting to that...

As Leon mentioned, some of those helicopters were sold to Jack Fetsko of Media, PA:
Woodsy Airfield wrote:
From sale of 29 Jan 1976. There are 5 photos in this group. They show some of the H-21's and HUP-2's owned by Jack Fetsko at the New London Airport, PA; photo dates of 4-25-81 and 7-17-84. Some of the info on picture backs is confusing, but Mr. Fetsko was sourcing out parts to make a complete H-21 which ultimately wound up as a display at the Boeing/Vertol Facility in Wilmington, Delaware. The photo with 3 nose sections of the H-21's shows the middle bird nose plate of 365 of which I had purchased. It is now in the possession of Eric Miller...

"H-21 and HUP-2 (BuNo 128517) of Fetsko's. H-21 on right is for sale. Both have sections of s/n 53-4367. 4-25-81"

"HUP-2s at airport - 128566, 128517, 128516, 128578

"H-21 7-17-84"

"HUP-2/H-21 New London Airport, PA 7-17-84"

So then l took all the serials and went through the Baugher listings. Didn't find all of them, but here's what info there was.

H-21s:
Joe Baugher wrote:

H-19s:

(51-)14262 (c/n 55215) delivered to US Army Aviation Sep 25, 1952. Noted with Orlando Helicopters, Senford Airport, Florida Oct 1988 (Again - Sanford?).

HUPs:

One more goodie to toss in: Leon shot this OH-23B (51-16340) at the Columbus, Ohio Defense Construction Supply Center on April 13, 1976:
"The 'Raven' was not listed in any of my catalogs, but since it was in the yard, why not..."

Looked pretty good other than a missing tail rotor. No info in Baugher and Googling the serial turned up zero; so I guess the Raven is ...nevermore :( .

A big thanks to Chris Brame for reproducing the photos in these listings. I think WIXers and Warbird enthusiasts have an instinctive insight that once a fact or photo is known, the 'Lets Find out all we can about the bird' kicks in...Always very interesting.... :)

Thanks for the info.

BTW: the H-21 is a big mother compared to the HUP!
