Daytona Area Potluck

Tue Jan 27, 2015 8:26 pm

I'm in the Daytona area for a few months again. Been doing some photo recon...so to speak. Nothing particular...just what was out there I have run across so far. Some of the usual targets, maybe a couple of news ones.

Actual combat PT boat in VN. The history of PTF-3 was from the Gulf of Tonkin Incident

Got a few more of all the above from different angles. If anyone asks I can post up specific airframes.

If you are in the area...also stop by the Deland NAS Museum off of US 17/92. That is where the old Lake Michigan TBF pic and PTF-3 came from. Both are a work in progress. The TBF was pulled from Lake Michigan quite a few years ago and sat in storage for a while before work started on it. They have a real nice HOS in the hanger too. They also have the ongoing search and recovery for the Osteen mystery SDB-5. They have alot of parts/pieces collected so far. They are not sure which SDB it was.

CJ,

I couldn't see any engines, either 2 front or 1 back, so was the red & white Seabee really a UC-1 Twin Bee? Aft fuselage did seem a bit longer than usual plus there was the porthole window in the extended aft cabin...

I guess I can always blow up the photo to better read the N-number....

I haven't been back down that way in 25 years. Used to hang out at NSB airport, at American Aero and Harry Doan's hangar in particular every chance I got while I was in A&P & flight school at ERAU in DAB.

More photos of the TBF would be great- get the back half? Don't see one without the bomb bay doors often.

HOS would be interesting also.

I can't tell which, but it looks like it might possibly be a single rear engine. There is a shodow of the prop on the front fuselage.

I'm going back over the museum in the next day or so with a better camera. These museum pics are from my cell phone. I'll snap a few more pics of the TBF, the HOS, the Mystery SDB recovery project pieces, a rebuilt 1950-something original jeep and a motar/machine gun combo that was designed by a USCG Gunner. I'll post them up when I get them.

Thanks! A belly shot and perhaps peering up into the bombay if access allows would be great!

Forgot to add these. I suspect they had many uses, one I suspect being in the survival kits for the aircrews.

I believe some of these type gliders were built there.
