Actually, I'm happy to help.

Call 254 559-3051 or fax 254 559-3052 to request of Ezell Aviation the asking price of the Wildcat and Sea Fury. Or go to ezellaviation.com/contacts.html

They, of course, are the only people on the planet who can give you the correct answer to your question. Anybody on this board who thinks they can may very well be unaware that 15 minutes ago, say, Ezell decided to drop the price.

It seems that what set you off was "the old chestnut," as you correctly put it, "If you have to ask..." It was doubtless meant as a joke, though it particularly seems to have annoyed you because you -can- afford it, and I suppose I can understand that. So go for it, best of luck, and I'm sorry if I offended you.

Hi Ben and belatedly welcome to WIX!
I personally would call Mark Clark and have general sort of conversation about who's got what for sale and how much, along with maybe Sherman Aircraft sales, before I got too deep in the bargaining process.
I don't know about everyone else but I've never seen such a buyer's market for airplanes. Just looking at all the bargains online makes my head spin. A nice Bonanza that a few years ago would have been a $150K USD airplane can now be purchased for half as much if the owner can even get a call on the listing.
Please let us know how it goes, Ignore the irritating ones and send us pics of your new airplane if you get lucky!!

Welcome Ben to the WIX. SOme days a guy has to be pretty thick skinned to hang in here!
Good luck at finding a Wildcat. Our local P-51 owner told me once that the Wildcats had never broken the $900K mark, although many have been advertised for more. Courtesy just sold one and I checked and it had been reduced to $839K and must have sold for a little less. ALso, it was refurbished in 2008 and has an executive interior and was owned by former test pilot Dick Foote.
Howard's is also pretty neat. An FM-2P it has the larger vertical fin and other late war upgrades. It has a window on the bottom of the fuselage for a camera. I know he installed electric gear retract and a smoke system. It says it was restored in 1981 and out of annual since 2010. The good news is it was anualled by Nelson Ezell and staff for thirty years.
My suggestion would be to make an offer less than $839K with seller to pay for fresh annual by Ezell Aviation. Oh, it had storm damage in 2010 when the tornado came through, so I would imagine it was really gone through at that time. Good Luck!

It sounds a little bit like you're trying to impress the board ("Nobody asked, but I've owned a Staggerwing...") with your assumed capability to bid on a warbird.

And having been a member of the board for one day--busy boy, 17 posts--I'm not sure how you can make such broad generalizations as saying you "can't get a straight answer."

If you go back and look at the thread about the Mosquito you will find that I had considerable difficulty getting a straight answer to a question I asked this morning. I came to this thread and asked a simple question and was hoping to get a simple answer. Instead I got the tired old chestnut about "if you have to ask.." Being the second occurence in a very short space of time this morning I made a statement about not being able to get a straight answer. That is how I justified such a broad generalization.

My reason for mentioning the Staggerwing was to make the point that I've been told before that if you have to ask you can't afford it and also found out that it isn't always true. It was also to point out that I have already owned a Staggerwing, wasn't interested in knowing the price of the one for sale and was planning on possibly moving up to a fighter. As of right now it is nothing more than "possible" but haven't made a decision yet. I didn't mention it because it wasn't related to the conversation, but I've also owned a couple other nice airplanes. None of those were for sale in the Pardue listing so I didn't need to mention that I had once owned a fairly nice Tiger Moth. The Staggerwing was listed so I mentioned it. If you look just a little down from that post you will find that I did go to the responsible party to ask about the price. I hadn't heard back from them when I made my original post and I was hoping to get a faster answer. To go further, as was pointed out by 51Fixer, lots of different people post here. Warbird pilots, mechanics, restorers, owners and such. I was going on the off chance that one of them might have the answer to my question.

I had most of the day off so I went through a few dozen pages of WIX. I commented on some threads. Sorry if you were offended by me not getting here earlier in the year so I could space my questions and posts out in a manner more pleasing to you but I just found out about this board from a magazine a few days ago. I asked a few questions about Canadian markings on an F-86 for a possible model project (the only thread that I actually got any help, thanks to those people), I got involved in a couple of conversations. The post count starts to run up and before you know it I was up to double digit posts. I'll ask my Rabbi to be sure but I didn't know I was doing wrong. I didn't know there was a time frame/post count/involvement quota on this board. I swear I didn't see it in the forum rules.

I'm not worried about impressing anybody here and I don't think anybody here is too worried about what I have to say about possibly buying an airplane. Least of all you, obviously. But I still fail to see why you care about it enough to make a post. But while you're here, being critical of the things I post and the frequency, it's not an assumed capability to bid on a warbird. I've been fortunate to have the ability to buy a few nice things from time to time. While I can't swing a five million dollar P-38, I can scrape a few shekels together to possibly get one of the fighters a little lower on the financial scale. But look at it this way. If any part of this boards goals might be to get the involvement of people that might own, fly or work on warbirds then you are certainly not helping those goals.

This place has a heck of a welcome wagon.

This place has its share of A holes.Good luck on your warbird huntin'

Don't let a few people on here detract you from this website. Unfortunately you have to deal with a few to get to the ones who appreciate any one who owns, flies, salvages, restores, enjoys warbirds! Heres to you :drink3: :drink3: :drink3:

If this is true, well, you know, we haven't spent much (any) quality time together recently. Just send me the check book and I'll pick you a winner... I'll be your true WIX friend!

Seriously, don't pay any attention to the self-important people in their mom's basement. There are a lot of real warbird people here. It's a good time to invest in this stuff if you aren't holding a lot of Greek bonds- you can't build them for what some of them are selling for. Good luck with your search for one.

And if you are in your mom's basement, you can still send me your checkbook. I'll take REAL good care of it...

Perhaps some of you gents who are so quick to welcome Red Baaron and disparage "the a holes" who aren't also bending over should go back and read his participation in the "Mosquito gets its finishing touches" thread. I also note that there has been no response from the "Baaron" To Mark Allen's polite request for more information on or photos of the Stag and Moth that he claims to have owned.

Consider, when I bought my new Ford, I asked the salesguy for the price, not the kid at Subway making my lunch.

Can we give this potential thread locker a rest. Considering why these 3 aircraft are for sale can we give Howard a little respect and move this conversation to another thread.

Well...I will welcome you to this board with this caveat. "If you don't have a pretty thick skin, some of our contributors can really torque your jaws." (Including me. believe it or not. )
Would you have been any less annoyed if someone here had quoted a price that you could afford only to find out that it was total BS?

Anyway...glad to have you. Hope you stick around in spite of the high probability of getting pi$$ed off at times. This may have been the first but, if you hang around, it won't be the last. Just remember, the stuff that goes on on this forum has nothing to do with the real meaning of life. Don't ask me what does, 'cause I don't know. However, I'm sure this ain't it.

Mudge the peacemaker :drink3:

Why not, it happens all the time. If the kid at Subway has the same Ford Focus SEL hatchback in bright red that I have my eye on, I'm going to ask him first "Are you happy with it?" Then the next question "Can I ask how much did it set you back?" Why? So I have some idea when I walk into the showroom where I can realistically expect to negotiate from. I've been to dealers who say the price on the sticker is it, if you don't buy it I'll sell it to the next person that walks in the door. And then there are the volume dealers who literaly block your exit saying "Tell me what I can do to close this deal right now!" Maybe the kid will steer me to his salesman who gave him a great deal?

Now if the kid goes to me "Pfff...your eating at Subway....you can afford to buy a car?" "I don't believe you even own a car, I bet you took the bus, show me your car in the lot." I'd be miffed too.

I've been flying for 24 years and hope to own an aircraft soon. And when that day comes when I can make it happen, I'll be doing my research and asking questions on forums as I know nothing about purchasing save getting a title search and pre-buy. How much is an Aeronca or Pacer going for nowadays anyway? Go to a broker or Trade a plane? How is it any different for someone with the means to buy something a little bigger?

My favorite quote of the day.

Whenever I go to Subway and that happens, I come right here to WIX to post and take it out on other people. You know, if more people on WIX got treated better at Subway (when they are actually out of their mom's basement) maybe most of them wouldn't need prozac....

I don't go to Subway for food- I go for skanky goth chicks. My other advice is to quit trying to date goth chicks; most of them don't understand WIX, and the good ones never show up at Subway. When the skanky goth chicks find out you live with your Mom, they usually want to move in.

I really like WIX because I can talk about skanky goth chicks and Subway and it fits in with all the other really enlightened posts here....

We need a Subway and Skanky Goth Chick smily!

Far from it! Actually you asked a vague question to start with that then strangely transformed into a completely different question of which several members clearly and completely answered it for you. Just because you couldn't wait for your question to be answered you cop an attitude. (flag #1) Then you start to insult members who have been contributing to this board for many years and have several years of experience in their fields, some of which are authorities in their fields and you mouth off about "how dumb" their imput was to your inquiry. (flag #2) ... All this in only a few days on the board.

Quote:
Being the second occurence in a very short space of time this morning I made a statement about not being able to get a straight answer.

As for the straight answer bit, what makes you think you earned one yet. No one is entitled to anything here. Maybe your attitude caused some members to say "screw you then", I know I did.

Granted the remark about "if you have to ask" is certainly a dumb*ss response to your inquiry, but it still has some merrit for someone who claims to be serious about purchasing a fighter some day. Usually anyone with serious intentions to become an owner of an aircraft that would most certainly cost six and seven figures would not need to ask an internet forum those questions as they would also most certainly know how, who and where to find those answers. As for contacting the Ezell's I'm sure if you really had an interest in purchasing anything from the estate of H Pardue that was up for sale it wouldn't be difficult at all.

(flag #3) You list an e-mail address on your posts of which I have sent you two nice and respectful e-mails asking if it was OK to inquire about your past aircraft ownership, I hear nothing back, I have sent you a couple of PM's, nothing!!! ... If you claimed to own a Cessna I wouldn't care to ask anything, but you claim to have owned a couple of fine aircraft of which I do have an interest and no response. I can understand if you want to keep your business to yourself and/or it's some sort of "secret" but you were the one who mentioned your aircraft ownership on a public forum that specifically deals with the types of aircraft you claimed to have owned. What do you expect people here to ask you, how's the weather in your area? ... No!!! their going to ask about your aircraft.

I could also understand that If I pissed you off by not answering your original question the way you wanted it answered fine be pissed but I would suggest, as others here have suggested as well, and that is to acquire a thick skin. As for not having an interest in responding to my several inquiries about your prior aircraft ownership (of which I only was interested, not doubting) I no longer care to know. You've had plenty of time to respond and it's obvious you care not to. At least not to me so that's fine with me.

So be careful who you point fingers at regarding not getting your answers straight. Rant over and out .

Mark,
Very early in my participation in the Mosquito thread I asked the question about who else, still flying today, had actual experience flying that particular type of airplane. Skip was mentioned shortly after that and then I asked besides him, Kermit Weeks and Howard Pardue (mentioning that he’d already died) who else there was. There was no answer until a page or two later when Firebird came up with a few names of other pilots. In the meantime there were a couple of other helpful people that had some ideas but nothing definitive. I was asking questions that I wanted answers to. I wasn’t looking for casual conversation. I don’t think that is being unreasonable.

I don’t know what you do with your time on the earth but I can’t think of a single instance where being a “member who has been contributing to this board for many years” matters for much. Big deal! If I had found this place a few years ago I might have gotten involved with it then. So far I haven’t seen anything, anywhere in any rule book that states how long a person must hang around before they are allowed to post questions or make comments. I don’t know who you are but I really don’t see that your being around here for a long time seems to account for much. If you really think that your status on this board means anything outside of this board then that is really sad. If you were attempting to defend JDK with that line of reasoning, please just give up on that. If you read the response he posted then you would see that he apparently took that comment (however poorly worded it was by me) in the spirit in which it was meant.

As for expecting a straight answer, well I asked a straight question. I figured that people with the straight answer would give it. People without the straight answer wouldn’t bother with any response. That sure seemed like common sense to me! Sorry, once again, I didn’t realize there was a time limit!

As for enquiring about the airplanes for sale, I don’t see why you or Stephan Wilkinson are even worried about my question. Neither of you had the answers so you just wasted your time. I hate to make things difficult for you but if you go to the second post I made on that thread, you will notice that I said I had contacted the Ezell’s and was waiting for a response. That was Thursday afternoon. When I made my last post on the subject, Friday morning, I hadn’t heard back from them yet. I did get a response, with the information I asked for. Now I’m looking at options. I knew who, how and where to call and I did it.

My simple reason for asking if anybody knew the price was just to see if anybody had the answer while I was waiting to hear back from the seller. That is all. I wasn’t coming here to announce purchase plans, wasn’t trying to make anybody think I was a rich guy who could buy whatever I wanted, wasn’t trying to name drop or anything else. I was trying to get information. Which I thought was the point of this place.
Quite honestly, I was surprised that nobody knew what the prices were. I really thought there might have been somebody on this board that was interested in buying them and had asked the question. Maybe the “warbird owner” population isn’t as high here as I thought it would be.

I don’t know what to tell you concerning emails and PMs. I did get one email from you in reference to the mosquito thread but that was sometime last week. I didn’t respond because I didn’t see a need to. I haven’t gotten any more emails from you at all. As for PMs, I have nothing in my inbox from you. If you sent them, and your PM system is working as I understand it is supposed to be, you will see they are still in your outbox. Or maybe you are just saying you sent them and trying to impress the masses with your bravery and daring. Either way, with the way you have acted towards me, wouldn't you honestly be surprised if I did anything you wanted?

I haven’t “claimed” to own anything. I have stated that I have owned them and it’s the truth. Quite honestly, you or Stephan Wilkinson believing it or not means very little to me. In fact, I would even say neither of you have any way to actually measure or comprehend how little it means to me. I was barely able to generate enough interest to respond to you.

Maybe I didn’t answer your question the way you wanted it answered. But did you notice that I didn’t do anything in response? That was partly because I didn’t have time. But it was also because I think you and Stephan Wilkinson have quite detestable personalities, based solely on my interaction with you here. As a result I’ve got nothing else to say about this subject to either of you.

One last thing Mark, you should really check with your doctor and make sure your blood pressure medication or anti depressants or whatever it is you are supposed to be taking is the right one for you. A person that exhibits the type of wild, ranting behavior that you seem to exhibit on this board should really take care of themselves. I’m not even close to kidding or being a smartass. I really think something isn’t right with you.
