It's not a part number, it will be a fairly small steel stamped 4 or more digit number like '4717' and should be consistant on every frame, it's the line number for stores parts pick during assembly.[/quote]
Is this specific to the C-47 or DC-3? I've never seen anything like that on other WWII aircraft that I have worked on/recovered. I have seen build plates and inspection plates made of aluminum or phenolic material, but never one that you describe of in steel. Do you have a picture of one?

More info has come to light after talking with one of the Delta Airline Museum historians. This tail and N145JR were obtained for parts (not scrapped on site) for the restoration of Delta "Ship 41". Anyone recall these two aircraft being brought there in 2001/2002 and where they may have come from?

Note that it was painted dark blue and red.
