Were any engines recovered with the wrecks?

Sun Sep 11, 2005 3:47 pm

Hi B-29 Super Fort

Yes quite a few engines came out with the A 20s - I don't know how much of them was useful but they were recovered .

Details on bombers salvaged from Papua New Guinea

Sun Sep 11, 2005 8:25 pm

Hi all,

Ok to get technical, I stand corrected, a set of B-24 wing (only) was recovered from this wreck:
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b ... 41091.html

Here are links to the known A-20s recovered.

http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/a ... 86615.html
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/a-20/A28-8.html
(they also might have taken smaller parts off 1-2 other wrecks, but not salvaged the whole thing or any major components).

I do not know about a David T. B-24 nose, if anyone has any photos or SN let me know

Two B-25s were moved (a mile or less) for static display inside new guinea (Aitape & Dobodura)

But still, no complete medium or heavy bomber has ever been salvaged that I am aware of.

Hope this helps,
- Justin

Justin--do you (or anybody else for that matter) know what happened to Poochie?

Hi Col

There is a "Big Gun D" model where you speak of - pretty terrible condition but it is and original survivor and somebody should love it and soon.

Justin - Yes well I guess it is about time someone did pull some big bombers out of there - at least 3 more B24's and 3 B17s plus some B26 and B25s worth the effort

What B-24s?

By B-17s do you mean Swamp Ghost, the Black Cat Pass one, and Blackjack?

B-26s would be the one in the Trobriands and the one in Salamaua, would they not?

I can think of two B-25 wrecks...B-25D Fer De Lance and the B-25H on Talasea.

There's a PV-1 at Talasea too, I'd like to see it recovered.

Doesn't a Beaufort count as a medium bomber?

Wolverine,

Yes, good ammendment: no American medium or heavy has been salvaged.

There were several Beauforts fuselages or center sections, all recovered in 1974. All of these fuselages came from Tadji, and were walked about 1/2 mile to the coast and loaded onto barge to Lae and exported to Australia, and since a few resold or in museums. Below are the details:

http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b ... A9-13.html (fuselage)
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b ... 9-141.html (fuselage)
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b ... 9-226.html (fuselage)
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/beaufort/A9-557 (center)
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/beaufort/A9-559 (fuselage)

Yes, the PV-1 at Talasea, has already been legally stripped for parts (not sure of the date) for the PV-1 (RB-34) restoration in New Zealand, at the MoTaT Museum.

Hope this helps,
- Justin

i have 1 of tallichette's b-24 pilot seats recovered out of india. i had it re- covered in o.d. canvas etc. it's in my office. amazing how small it is.... that attests to the average height of a ww 2 pilot, compared with today's average height of a person, interesting!!
