Goxhill......78th FG's Home Before Duxford..........Today

Sun May 29, 2011 8:50 am

Before the 78th FG moved to it more common known home of Duxford, it had a brief stay on arrival in the UK at Goxhill airfield, North Lincolnshire. Once the 78th moved south it continued to be operated by the USAAF as a training field for new pilots coming to the ETO, the 496th FTG with P-38's and P-51's
Today the airfield has returned to agriculture and storage, but much remains of the technical site

Today the fire truck and meat wagon sheds still survive, but the tower was demolished for relocation to the States ( a sad story in itself )

Mechanical Grade oil drum left over

The photo developing building still survives, with doors and stencils still alive if faded

Operations buliding still stands with doors fading in the sun

The 3 main hangars are alive and still in use today, but not with the P-47 / P-38 / and P-51's taking shelter, but a more lesser interesting use of storage

I think it is fabulous that the field and some of its old buildings still survive.

Please post more! It's amazing to see that these things still survive.
Is the Goxhill tower the one that is going to the Fighter Factory in VA?

Thats the sad story Boghopper mentions.

The Tower was hacked apart for the move, proved to difficult to do and then left.

It now looks like a construction site.

A great shame.

It should be stated in defense of the Fighter Factory that they were as astonished and taken aback by how the tower was taken down as anyone else. Apparently it was knocked down with a bulldozer or some such thing... what they received was effectively a load of masonry with steel bits which had to be manually unloaded and sorted.

On the positive side, it couldn't be in better hands now, and those of us here in the States who cannot afford to venture to Old Blighty will get to experience a genuine WWII control tower in an operational environment, once the reconstruction is complete.

Thanks Boghopper for the pictures and info.

I was just here last Sunday and drove around a bit:

Was also here almost 10 years ago, some bricks of the control tower were still there at that time.

It's always amazed me how there are still relics and reminders of WWII all across England and Europe. Thanks for sharing.
