Warbird Information Exchange

I recieved another most informative issue of Classic Wings magazine in the mail today. The magazine is reporting that 4 additional aircraft will soon be on display in the new restoration area at Udvar Hazy. I'm not sure what if any restoration will take place on these airframes but at least they will be on public display. The aircraft are: 1. While I loved Silver Hills it was a good thing I did not live near there. I would have spent all my time worrying them about preserving the jewels they had in non-climate controlled bldgs. and hangars.
That Horten being just one of many!

Just visited Udvar-Hazy over Christmas Holidays and it is one of my favorite places in the DC area.
My nephews kept finding stuff I didn't know much about and so I had to go find out more.

Take a friend or better yet... take family and enjoy a treasure trove!

The only reasons the airplanes matter is what the veterans did with them... and why.

It is my understanding that these will be displayed "as is" until they formally get the Phase 2 restoration facility up and running; there is no certainty that these will be the next restorations.

The Lippisch DM-1 is noteworthy in that it has been in its crate since at least the late 1940s or early 1950s. I think I am correct in saying that, unless this crate has recently been opened, no NASM staffperson has ever seen this artifact. I am sure that I am not the only person who is learning in learning the state of the aircraft and the completeness of its interior. Does anybody have information on the history of this in the US? This is a glider-only test aircraft for a planned ramjet-powered possibly supersonic design.

The JRS going to U-H will be nice. I saw this plane at Garber and it is a good candidate for as-is display, with conservation or minimal restoration, like the P-38. It is intact, presentable, and bears damage from the Dec. 7 attack that would be a shame to mess with.

Great news that these will finally be displayed.

I emailed the museum about that a/c and about the Swoose several years ago. The answer was "There are currently no plans...". Well, The Swoose is at the NMUSAF, so maybe it's time to restore the Ta 152H.

The fact that his donation sparked getting one of the best aircraft display museums in the country off the ground is good enough for me. You can call it the National Air and Space Museum Annex if you like that better.

Yeah, I know, it's great. And like you, I am totally happy with the donation and all the support that followed.
I have accepted reality and know that is the chosen name of this great museum. Thanks for letting me complain a little. I am over it.

Tony - no sweat, your rant on the name is understandable and ideally it would carry a different name. Now about tourists and their feet in the WWII Monument pond, yes you CAN still be offended. I would think people who do that are just not thinking, but definitely inappropriate.
