Scott.., what BG had that black and yellow winged globe? I can't think of it right now. It was not the 314th or 315th.., I know that. 73rd?

Yep, the "Ball and Barb" was the official nose art sanctioned by 73rd Wing H.Q. when the original artwork was ordered removed. Incidentally, the 73rd had some dazzling artwork before the removal......

if it is.., it has been buried in tonnes of sandy, salty volcanic soil for 65 years..., so not looking so good. I would imagine most of it was carted off and melted or cut up into plateware and or housing for the locals.

That certainly would set off a metal detector or two for the curious treasure hunter.

I am not sure where on Tinian/Saipan that dump is/was. Need to look at some old aerials of those fields and figure this one out.

There were dumps on each of the forward fields that I recall were "harvested" as scrap sometime after the War. Is it certain that this photo couldn't have been taken on Guam? They ran a consolidated maintenance facility there toward the end of hostilities and the mix of Liberators, '29s, and Navy stuff leads me to think this dump could have been there.

Without actually getting out my reference material, there were four Air Service Groups originally stationed on Guam, one each for the four Groups of the 315th Wing. They were the 24th, 73rd, 75th, and 76th ASGs and did their "on the job" technical trainin by supporting Groups training at the 2nd AF fields in Kansas and Nebraska. The four ASGs rotated to the combat zone, arriving in May or so of '45. In August of '45 the individual ASG units were combined into a the 76th Consolidated Air Service Group. This was when the Consolidated Maintenance program was implemented.
