Bob Hoover was replaced with the first Golden Hawk lead pilot, Fern Villeneuve. Rob Fleck and Paul Kissman from VwoC were also there. No idea why Hoover could not make it







Thanks for all the great comments. It was a great show to shoot.

Only disappointment was the lack of warbirds in the Saturday show. Considering the announcer said everything was going to fly it was a very poor showing. The show was supposed to be a Salute to Veterans. Not even one B-17 took to the air. Way too much aerobatic repetitiveness for my liking each day. Other then that I was very satisfied for my first visit. Glad I decided to attend all week.

Trip from Reno nv..to osh was perfect,we only made 1 fuel stop with an average speed of 290kts and 24gph...we should have 3 or 4 back next year..see ya in reno

They put all four 17's up on Friday. All I have ever take at Oshkosh now as far as Warbird pics is static, takeoff and landing shots. The racetrack pattern is way, way, to far out for good shots, even with my 500mm and 1.6 crop body. The jet show on Thursday was really bad, with the exception of the F-86, and A-4 grouping. A Mig-21, at 2,000 ft, directly over my head!!! That's not a good airshow.

At least you guys are learning. So let's review:

1) Some warbird owners depart by the weekend, some only arrive late in the week. Ever since Airventure went to a Monday-to-Sunday format, the Friday show has typically been the most active with warbirds.

2) I agree completely with Tim's assessment of Thursday. The F-86/A-4 trio was a treat, and even the T-33 tailchase was fun, but not getting smoked by the Mig-21 and Fury at low level was just not right. The lack of F-4 couldn't be helped.

3) Ah yes, the racetrack. The key to getting closer is to LEAVE THE GROUNDS and drive to the east side of Wittman...been doing it for years. The local constabulary blocks off Hughes Street, but Medallist and Marvel Drives are both open. It's free to bring a folding chair and sit in the open spots. You'll be much closer to the action. Downside for pics is that you'll be shooting into the sun more...some building obstruction as well.

4) Come to WIXFEST at Zack & Jen's. See you next year!

Thanks but no thanks on the shooting into the sun option. I go to enough shows with screwed up layouts, I will not shoot into the sun unless forced to do so.
How come the airport builders never took the lowly photographer into consideration?

Lowell Thompson, are you a Waco fan? NC32071 belongs to long time Waco guy Jack Hill from N.C. and 32033 is a brand new restoration from Ohio wearing it's original colors again. I don't recognize the green one.

It's a small world after all...

Well, what did it sound like to you?

According to everything2.com, when translating the “name” on the Yak-3 using the Russian slang and colloquialisms you get:

shíshka -- a big shot, a VIP, someone of great importance
súka -- a classic four-letter word, it means bitch, bastard, etc.

I wonder if Mark only divulged that information after the sale was agreed.

(It's OK Mark, he does have sense of humor!!!! ).
