How about here Mike: http://www.wingsofhistory.org/ I've been there and it is a great museum focusing primarily on antique and golden age aircraft.

Mike,

There are also 3 pole-mounted airframes on Alameda, in the general area of the Hornet. An A-4 and an A-7 by gates into the former NAS, and another A-4 outside Encinal High School

Has the A-4 "on base" been returned to display? I started an airframe dossier for it recently...
ImageAerial Visuals - Airframe Dossier - Douglas A-4A Skyhawk, s/n 142200 USN, c/n 11454

Apparently it was damaged by high winds in 2008 and had been removed for repairs.

Not sure, I've not been round that way for a while. Is that the Encinal or the NAS aircraft?

No, the other one near-by on the former base.

RE: American warbirds, Carson City, NV

I pulled up Carson City Airport on google.earth and counted 9 HU-16's on the ramp. Looking at the image there appears to be a road that seems to run fairly close to the HU-16's so "thru the fence photography" seems to be doable.
One of the risks of google.earth images is the age of the photo...an unknown.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the HU-16's having flown on them in the US Trust Territory back in the mid-60's.
PanAm operated three of them for the US Dept of the Interior on a weekly route. Visited Truk, Ponape, Saipan, Rota and Guam.

If you're going by Travis, make a stop by Nut Tree Airport. It's not a 'museum', but if Duncan is around, he'll open up his hangars and let you look around. It's a great collection.

Good heck Mike - if you are going to be in Reno and Fallon you should put some serious miles on the rental and visit Wendover!!

Remember I have three operational T-33s, 1 C-123, F-86L and for the time being a DC-5!

Mike;
Going to the California Capitol Air Show it's hard for me to say which way is best to get to the field since I'm always there early and leave late. I think the best entrance is around Mather Field Road exit off of Route 50. Parking is actually on the ramp. I'll be all overvthe flight line but my guys, the Airdales, are quite visible and are easily found on the West end of the ramp. Ask any of the ground ops guys and they should be able to locate me. I'll PM you my cell number so you can buzz me.

Ione has lots of warbirds, from the Sanders and their Seafury's, to the Collings ME-262 (might be gone by then0 the B-23 Dragon that's been on Ebay recently and a lot more. You need a contact there to get good access, but I might be able to hook you up with my friend at the show and see what he can do.

Thanks for the tips John. As for Google Earth images dates, you should turn on the Historical Images option in the View menu. It puts a slider bar in the top left corner of the screen which indicates the dates.

 Please tell me you have photos.

Thanks Cindy! I'll be passing by there on Day 5 of my trip. Is anything kept parked outside? It appears so in the Google Earth images. I won't be stopping by until later in the day, so I would only have a chance to see what might be kept outside.

I wish I could Tom. Unfortunately there are limits and I will need to return home to return to work so I can pay the mortgage. Don't you hate it when making a living gets in the way of life? Maybe I can make it to Wendover on the next trip.

Thanks for the tip. I'll send you a PM with my cell phonen number... once I remember what it is. :?

Interesting, very interesting. I'll see if I can set aside some time in the schedule for it as an option.

Thank-you very much to everyone for their input.

Mike:

RE: Trust Territory SA-16's

I have a couple posted on http://www.1000aircraftphotos.com (photo no. 7112). Also I have a photo set in the "Photo Gallery" section in the WIX Hangar. Scroll down until you find "NAS Kwajalein Ramp Photos" Set One and Two.

Also, the attached file on NAS Alameda llustrates the pole mounted A-4 and A-7 aircraft. http://www.airfields-freeman.com/CA/Air ... tm#alameda

If you are going to be in Sacramento, don't forget about the McClellan AFB Museum,
(I got a set of wings for my PT-19 project from them, also stationed there from 1985-1991).
If coming or going South, there is the Castle AFB museum with a B2 Vulcan bomber & B-36.
Also Reno Air Races coming soon (Sept).
