The Mig29K was meant to operate off of a Kunetsov Carrier ( features such as folding wings and arresting gear)

The Mig29SM variant was an upgraded S model which made the Mig29 a true multirole fighter as well as allowing the Mig29 to carry the R77 (AA12 Adder or "AMRAAMSKI") ARH Missile.

The Mig29SMT are upgraded variants of the first generation Mig29s bringing in further HOTAS and other in cockpit improvements as well as increased fuel capacity and a newer engine (RD-133 thrust vectoring)

The designation Fulcrum-C (Nato code) are widely used for Russia Mig-29.
But yes there are many designation and upgrades such as The "SE/SD/SM" improvements in the MiG-29S over the years, but rarly used as a designation.

The Newly Mig-29K have substancial difference in engine, avionics and airframe layout over the older Mig-29 in Russia.
Its a different beast alltogether..

Maybe I'm displaying my ignorance, but are their any Migs of any number
by any nation fighting the war on "terror"? I'm not sure what the Pakistan A.F. is flying but in my remoteness down here in southern Texas I could be missing something.

The first one to hit my mind would be India.
India are fielding Mig-29, i think they are are under upgrading now..
They have border problems with Pakistan(Taliban or Al-caida).

But if you are talking about Mig-29 used inside Afganistan or Iraq then nope, i don't believe so?

Not many Mig-29 left operational in the RuAF.

Air Forces Monthly magazine (pretty reliable source), April 2009 issue, p. 72 states 291 MiG-29SMs are still operational. Noted units (source elsewhere) are:

-783rd Training Centre, Armavir
-14th Fighter Aviation Regiment, Kursk
-28th Fighter Aviation Regiment , Andreapol
-237th Air Technology Demonstration Centre of Guards, Kubinka
-19th Fighter Aviation Regiment, Millerovo
-31st Fighter Aviation Regiment, Zernograd
-120th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, Domna

..As for a breakdown of types operated by the VVS (Voyenno-vozdushnye sily Rossii), go to:

Here is an update on the Mig-29 in the RuAF:

Total number (active): 130

Inventory:
AF/AD: MiG-29 "Fulcrum", 90 + 40 training.
+ ~150 in reserve(in poor condidion)

New procurment:
Two serial Mig-29M2(a cusin of Mig-35) for RuAF to be delivered in 2010.

01.2009
28 MiG-29SMT including 6UB from cancelled Algerian deal.

NAVY: MiG-29K for the Russian NAVY??
There are reports that they will get New Mig-29K, but it's a bit muddy at this point..
Russia are currently fielding only one medium Carrier.
