Ok, I must be very dense today or something, but I've honestly never encountered any solid evidence that supports the idea that a short-fuselage P-40L ever existed.

Although I've found a written reference or two which allude to the P-40L-1 having a short fuselage, the few pics I've seen of that version show a long fuselage.

For examples, check out pages 78 and 80 of Warhawk Aces of the MTO:

Any P-40 experts care to speak definitively on this? Photographic evidence would be appreciated.

OK From P-40 Warhawk Vs Ki-43 by Carl Molesworth from osprey Pub. Pg 22
"P-40L/Kittyhawk II

P-40L-1 retained the short fuselage of the early P-40F but the 650 P-40L's starting w/ S/N 42-10480 had the 26" fuselage extension".

I like your form of counseling......works for me :D. As for all others, they can find their own form.......(I'll take Claudia Black....)

Must admit the only book ever to have it right was, of all things, P-40 Warhawk in Action (No.205) by Richard Dann, which says nothing about short fuselages. All other Holy Grails of aviation writing all state the the first 50 were shorts.

Its hard to break 60 odd years of tradition even when confronted with proof, I once sent someone a photo of an P-40L-1 only to be quoted the Holy scriptures in return :?. Same for a couple of other P-40 Myths (such as Russia got Merlin powered P-40's, and RAF Tomahawk I and II aircraft did not fly operations in Europe (except a unauthourised sortie) both of which are incorrect - No Merlin Powered Aircraft were sent to Russia and Tomahawks flew over 300 "unauthourised" sorties, losing 4 aircraft, all which were recorded in ORB's for Court Martial Proof (vtic)) :roll: .
