One eyewthiness told me about a half year ago that 2 tail planes were involved in the attack. An characteristic shape which he never forgot. A local historian told me that it were P-38's. Unfortunally he didn't had any further information.
Some people also talk about the RAF, but in those days all tanks were a Tiger tank and all planes were from the RAF. As far as I know the RAF bought the P-38, but never used it in combat.
