P-38 attack German train Holland september 1st 1944

Sun Feb 08, 2009 5:15 pm

On the morning of September 1st 1944 (around 9.00hrs a.m. CET) a few trains were attacked in the vicintiy of Roermond, The Netherlands. One of those trains is of special interest to me. It's a German train heading to Roermond which was attacked by (as eyewitnesses told me) P-38 fighters. The German train stopped just a few miles to the east of Roermond and was completly destroyed. Do you know where I could find more information about this attack/raid and the fighters (squadron) involved?

Thanks for your help.

Don't have any information, but what is special about the train?

A look through the histories of the 9th AF 38 groups 367th, 370th and 474th FGs doesn't mention anything about attacking trains. It appears the 474th was the only 9th AF 38 Group up that day.

The 479th FG of the 8th AF was still in 38s but their history doesn't mention attacking trains either.

Ah, those famous Dutch mountains...

Seriously though, sorry I can't help, welcome to WIX, can you add any further info yourself? How reliable were the witnesses, and given the negatives so far, could they have been a different kind of twin engined aircraft perhaps? Unlikely I know.

AAF In WW2 Combat Chronology says for 8th AF on 1 September: "950-plus heavy bombers sent against targets in E France and Germany are recalled because of bad weather. One bomber bombs railroad at Hasloch. 11 fighter groups offer support, one group strafing a locomotive."

The 9th that day were active on fighter sweeps in N and E France.

One eyewthiness told me about a half year ago that 2 tail planes were involved in the attack. An characteristic shape which he never forgot. A local historian told me that it were P-38's. Unfortunally he didn't had any further information.
Some people also talk about the RAF, but in those days all tanks were a Tiger tank and all planes were from the RAF. As far as I know the RAF bought the P-38, but never used it in combat.
