Will be glad to send you a high res scan. This is a first generation, original 1930, 8 x 10 photo from Henderson's files, so details are good in high res scan. I think there are some other related photos. I once observed to someone, that Henderson's photos were disproportionately heavy with photos of female aviators. He really had an eye for the ladies. A couple of hundred shots of most of them. Wish you were closer. Would love to spend a day or so looking at each others stuff. And to be honest, I'm having a lot of trouble IDing a lot of these air racing pilots and esteemed guests at the Air Races. Bet you would be a huge help. Udet and winning foreign pilots, Mary Pickford, Jean Harlow, Will Rogers, and planes are not too hard, but there are so many group shots and oddball shots & tons of military units with BEAUTIFUL classic fighters & bombers on ground & in the air. There is a great candid shot of a group of the women pilots playing cards in a small shed. Other shots have both men & women driving around all kinds of Auburn Speedsters, Deusenbergs * special little mini-cars made for he air race "messengers" and racers. Even some propelled by push propellers powered by Henderson aero engines on the back of them! By the way-if you have any uncommon WWI aircraft shots, I'd be happy to trade for them.
NOTE* I just went to email the scan to you. Thought I had your email address, but cannot seem to find it. PM or email it (as per my website contact in the sig below) to me, please.

Great shots!
Thanks for posting!

Just thought some of you would like to know that photo #10 of the Marcoux-Bromberg/Keith Rider R-3 "3" NX-14215 is still with us.
It was restored at the New England Air Museum back in the 1980's.

http://www.neam.org/inventory/airprofile.asp?ID=111

If you'd like to see this aircraft actually flying, just watch "Test Pilot" with Clark Gable. It's the plane he flys in the racing sequence.

The museum houses the largest collection of original Thompson Trophy Racers in the world. The Laird Solution (The winner of the first Thompson Trophy) and the P-51 N-13Y which won the 1948 Race. Along with the Replica Gee Bee R-1, the museum has a very unique display of aircraft that raced in Cleveland.

Blue skies,
Jerry

PS: Any more photos?

Not so sure the largest....there is the Crawford Museum in Cleveland that had Art Chester's Goon, Wedell-Williams #57, a P-51 and I think another . They also house a fantastic collection of original Hubbell paintings and air race memorabilia

Great photos!

There is a miniscule exhibit in Lemont, IL about Rudy Kling's air racing career.

I didn't know the "Goon" was there now. I thought the Mustang was sold. Is that true? Maybe I'm thinking of the F2G.

Here's a good story about Wedell-Williams #57. Back in the early 1980's I lived in Cleveland and my wife worked at Cuyahoga Co. Airport. One day I came early to pick her up and thought I would walk around. Mostly new stuff...corporate jets, spam cans and such. As I walked past one of the large hangars I spied a LARGE radial engine. Investigating further it was the WEDELL-WILLIAMS #57!!!!! Holy cow...here is the live airplane that Roscoe flew! The wings were off and all the fabric was off the fuselage. It was being recovered. I had my wife come take some photos of me with the airplane in some similar Roscoe Turner poses I had in original photos. I looked quite dashing next to that fabulous old bird. Well, to make things more interesting, all the original fabric with the race number and all his accomplishments hand painted on was laying on the hangar floor sort of rolled up. I began to sweat! I unrolled the fabric piece (about 10ft long) and stared in amazement. The fabric from the other side was just laying there as well. I looked all around hoping I could find ANYONE connected with this airplane to see what the plans were for this fabric. No luck. I ended up leaving without one stitch of fabric and the next couple of times I went out there the hangar was closed and then we moved. I always have wondered what happened to it. Did it get carefully preserved or did it get thrown in the trash? One of life's unanswered mysteries I am sure!

Hi. Ive been lurking on this forum for a couple of years and have never really had much to say (basically because I dont own a plane). My name is Dave Pagano and Im located In Sydney Australia.
I have a real passion for early aviation especially raceplanes from the thirties and off course warbirds.
I built a flying control line model of the Hall racer and entered it in the Nationals here.
I judge second in the static but crashed the model in flight.
Its a really hard plane to fly. From my research the real one had some serious problems (re the taller rudder). So much so that the owner refused to fly it and it was eventually scrapped. If someone can send me an email I can send them a pic of the model to post on the site.
Also someone on this forum wanted to build a model ( I cant find his post). I went to a real lot of trouble to scratch build this model. I believe its as accurate as can be considering the lack of info. I still have the hand drawn plans for the model that Im more than happy to copy for anyone who wants to pay the postage.
My other passion is collecting old cars and vintage raceboats.
I have recently restored a Rolls Merlin powered hydroplane that I raced for the first time 8 weeks ago.
Before everyone gives me a hard time for wasting a great engine.
The boat has a great racing history from the 60's winning everything there was to win and miraculously surving all this time after a near fatal crash in 1972.
The engine ( Merlin 70 series) was sold as war surplus and never flew in an aircraft.
Plus my income will never realise ownership of the kind of plane I dream of. This is a close second.
You can check the boat out on you tube just type in Aggressor Thunderboat or Dave on Collectors.

My friend has just finished a set of plans for me of the Weddell Williams Gilmore Lion which I hope to start in the New Year. Hopefully it will fly better. Dave
