I like the Heritage Flights. I never tire of seeing the phantom. I remember seeing a video from pre-legacy flight years of Snodgrass in the F-14 and a Tigercat doing formation aerobatics. That was pretty awesome.

I do like the idea of having more first-generation jets in the flights, and I think that the Air Force and Navy should step up and operate such types that have proven too troublesome for private operators to afford easily, such as F-84, F9F, etc. Like what the RAF used to do with its old-jet flight and the RN still does with its Sea Hawk. Then at least the flights would include a component that isn't seen elsewhere or by itself.

Seeing the multiple generations of fighters in the sky together isn't really necessary for me to appreciate the comparison, I find that I am able to do that just as well when they fly individually -- or better, since they can really show what they can do then rather than just hold a formation with a dissimilar aircraft.

I consider the musical accompaniment sappy and annoying, and am more likely to gag than choke up, but I guess I'm just not into that stuff.

Good thoughts - although I don't see the Air Force or Navy getting into operating older vintage jets (at least beyond the F-4's at Tyndall and Holloman - which still serve as "drones.") anytime soon.

I will say that whether as an offical Heritage or Legacy Flight or in some other form I LOVE seeing formations of aircraft more than just individual flybys. I saw a great picture of a 4-ship flight at Oshkosh last year that I would have loved to have seen. It was a diamond formation consisting of an FJ-4B Fury, an F-86F Sabre and two T-33's.

An example of a terrific WWII formation I would like to see is a P-38, P-40, P-47 and P-51. Formations like Four P-47s flying together would be outstanding, also. I just find the sight and sound of large formations of aircraft more exciting and dramatic than single ship flybys.

Now for very large aircraft (AN-124, AN-225, AN-22, A380, 747, C-5, Martin Mars, etc.) single aircraft flybys ARE very dramatic and I would love to see those anytime.....

I love the Heritage and Legacy, not only is it for our viewing pleasure but it is dedicated to all veterans. The music is beautiful, We Remember is a perfect song for it. It takes a lot of skill and a lot of time to slow and maintain the formation these guys do. To vlado and all the HF and Legacy guys, well done and keep em' flying!

Now that thats out of the way. In 2006 there was a true bomber flight, 2 passes, photo and flat and after the flat the B-52 lifted up over the B-17. Here is a pic of mine from it.

Also, there was a transport heritage flight at Altus AFB with a C-47 and C-17, had pretty close formation. There is a video of it on you tube, heres the link to it.

"Favorite formations" is off-topic, but could and should be a whole other thread. With photos!

I always enjoy the Heritage and Legacy Flights. Probably the best formation flying there is. I'm always amazed at the precision of the pilots in each of the maneuvers, and how they reposition after each pass. The Heritage Flights at the Mustang Gathering were some of the best flying I've ever seen. One thing the Heritage Flight needs though... MORE PHANTOMS!!

I do like the Legacy/Heritage flights, but do get tired of seeing the same P-51/P-47/P-38 doing the duties. More mixing up of different aircraft types is much more interesting. Why can't there be Legacy/Heritage flights of something other than fighters? More variety would be nice.

[quote="jwc50The one I am waiting for is after "FIFI" takes to the air again:

B-29/B-52H/B-1B/B-2A

I know that it will have to be a rather "loose" formation, but it would be fantastic! :D[/quote]

Throw a B-17 into that mix and you've got it nailed! 8)

For those keeping score, I enjoy the Heritage flights, no matter what aircraft are participating.

Cheers!

Well, I still like Heritage flights -- mostly because I always seem to be working when they're going on and I usually just get a regretful glance as one goes overhead.

We had a little local air show last weekend, and had a good Heritage flight -- 60 years of close support. Unfortunately we had poor weather and terrible light for photography.

Nice to have some USAF presence up here in small town Canada...

I like them (obviously as Shipley and I did the first ones back in '97) but it's great that we've added Kevin Eldridge from Planes of Fame and also the Anders' Skyraider as we need more than the standard P-51/P-47/F-86 week in and week out. With Steve and Kevin we get access to the Museum's great variety of planes on the same weekends and I really think that adds to the program (I hope I don't get replaced for writing this!). Now if we can only repaint one of the Starfighters in 1950's livery .... Jim

I think that they are pretty cool but I'd really like to see a vintage warbird aerobatic team! 4 Mustangs or F-86's or anything like the Angels or TBirds in props or vintage jets. but that's just me 8)

There was one in the UK (with occasional appearances in New Zealand) for a while - the Breitling Fighters. Very spectacular they were too. Close formation aerobatics with P-51, P-40, Spitfire and Corsair.
