Actually I continue to find out things to learn about. This board sure helps. The pics you share really add a touch of operational history to the aircraft. At Chino I really enjoyed talking to pilots, crew and the workers who built them. The east coast, isolated airport environments and time marching on has all but cut me off from that aspect of the history of the WWII period. So thanks to you and the others who keep that alive.

I know (or knew-past tense RIP) a lot of 20th FG pilots and crew guys. They were a mighty fine bunch of joes and completely bonded by their experences. A finer bunch you'd be hard pressed to find!!

Might index the aft spinner to the #1 prop blade.
Also there were marks on some spinners and prop blades to aid in sighting the gun camera. There was a mark on the center lower carb intake. Align with the mark on the spinner. One mark allows you to sight gun camera on a distant ground target. The other spinner mark aligns a prop blade. On the back of the prop blade was a series of range marks that could be used to sight the gun camera as well IIRC.

If recall for Rolls Royce technical papers on radiator care there is a chemical, sodium (something? that is use to clean or preserve the cooling system and radiators on the Merlin in British planes. This may be the NaMbt. After I read the papers some years ago, I tried to buy some to the chemical and found it must also be used in meth labs, as the company was very unfriendly and suspicious, and would only sell it in a 55 gal. drum.
Regular flush out radiator cleaner will not clean the metallic salts and scale that deposits in radiators, Ray had to use an acid bath for that, I think it was HCL, and it is a stinky dangerous mess, but does leave the brass coolant pipes clean and a nice bright color. I think I remember they said that aluminum radiators can be cleaned with sulfuric acid. Caution if you are doing this, as I not real sure and might have the acids reversed.

As my friend Bill pointed out ( ) NaMBT is a chemical that is an antimicrobial. It kills little "fungus amoungus" that could live in and clog your coolant system. Not a good thing in your aircraft systems.

Note that NaMBT is mentioned on the internal panel markings of the main system and mentions a TO. I didn't see any external marking on the print for NaMBT as shown in Jack's photo.
Nor are the gun camera prop spinner markings shown on this print.
