Can anyone debrief us on this year's NWOC? Anything new or interesting to report? Thanks.

NWOC was well attended again this year. With the exception of my presentation... the speakers were excellent. I will take a whack at the speakers from memory.

Dr Mike Schloss (Skyraider) told us we are all too fat and need to eat less and exercise more.

Dr Warren Silberman (FAA Doc and Huge pilot friend) told us that if you use the correct AME and are smart, almost anyone can get a medical with some work.

Doug Gilliss (Jet Examiner) gave a good Checkride preperation overview.

Hal Weekley Gave told some wonderful stories about flying combat in B-17s and then flying the EAA -17 for another many many years.

Rogers Smith, (Test pilot who has flown nearly every jet with wings, and some without) gave an incredible speech on the culture of safety.

Allen Silver (parachute expert) gave a great talk about using, and caring for your parachute. He also covered survival equipment and aircraft egress.

I gave my regular speech about the last years statistics and the attitude we approach our airplanes.

Two California pilot/Lawyers gave a great talk about liability and incorporation to protect yourself and your families.

The second day, back by Popular demand, Dr Jerry Berlin talked about "the affects of authority" He told us more than we want to know about how the pilots mind works, or doesn't work. Why we are good at what we do and how that can become a problem in certain circumstances.

The engine panel was very well represented. I will try at the risk of forgetting someone....

Precision Engines,
Roush Jack & Paul Draper
Joe Yancey
Mike Nixon
Sam Thompson
Covington?
Bud Wheeler
others???
I missed the Saturday Lunch and afternoon speakers.

Bob Odegaard and I went and flew the POF PSP C-47. It had a bad carb. so that did not work out.

Saturday night was a reception at POF and sunday am was the wrap up.

The NWOC crew did a great job as usual and I strongly recommend attendance. Next year is in the W, DC area.

Tailwinds,
Doug Rozendaal.

Dumb question time...

Is there any reason a digest of the discussion, or other version (video, transcript, PDF, PowerPoint...) couldn't be shared more widely? It strikes me from Doug's headlines that the least of the items discussed has a lot more value and appropriate insight than some of the whitter we perpetrate here at times (self included).

There's also, in most of the cases clear benefit to warbird operators outside the US, as well as an insight to current US trends and demands.

It would also be good PR for the NWOC, and perhaps encourage those operators who are hovering outside the periphery to get involved; it's not the guys attending the safety briefings we really need to be talking to...

Even non-operators like me, and other interested parties are keen on good info, but it's hard to get at times. However rumour and misinformation is widely and easily available.

Maybe too late for this year, but maybe worth considering something for next?

Just some thoughts.

Skylines, the publication of the North American Trainer Association posts many of these topics in articles throughout the year.
(Thanks again, Douggy!!)

One of the highlights of the weekend for me was Friday night having dinner at a restaurant with a group of warbird people, and I ended up sitting across the table from Hal and Billie Weekly and really enjoyed talking or more so listening to great WW II stories.
Beside Doug R who has given a good summary, some other WIX folks there were Gary Austin(saw but did not get to talk to him), Eric Downing, Rick Siegfried, etc. I spent some time talking Spitfires with Terry Rush, and also Gerry from the Russell Group. Not Wixers, but Denver folks were Mark Johnson and Mike Bertz. I'm sure there were lots of other familar names out of the 100 or more I'd estimate there, some have slipped my mind.

You didn't see me there. American Airlines delayed my flight out of MAF so much that I wouldn't have made my connecting flight to Palm Springs, so I stayed here.

So Gary did not attend! I saw his name on the list of those signed up, and I thought I saw him from across the room. I wondered why I never ran into him up close. As for Doug, Rick, Mark, Mike, Terry, Gerry, I know they made it as I spoke to them. Anyway Gary would have been a good one to have there. I myself had some inconvenient airline times and missed the opening couple of hours, as well as the Sun am summary as I had to catch the 7:45 am flight out, the afternoon one being full.
