The spars have been remanufactured and as soon as the jig is free, the wings will start going back together.

Taylor, The Corsair has been in Idaho for about four years.

I probably won't make it back to look at the plane again until late next year but as I dig up more pictures, I'll be sure and post them.

By remanufactured do you mean new spars caps will be installed or have the existing caps simply been removed for corrosion control and will be reinstalled?

As far as the air-stair goes... Good riddance. Fighters shouldn't have 'em!

Haha, a few friends of mine flew in that under it's prior owner, they might disagree with you! Just kidding. Glad to see the Corsair going through such a thorough restoration, makes me think, if CWH had not have sold it, this would not have happened, and it would have been grounded. It's nice to know it should be flying for many years to come.

It's all new.

If I recall correctly, this aircraft was used in the filming of Ba Ba Black Sheep, right? Was the air stair door added at that point for the filming? Just curious. It is an odd thing to have on a fighter!

This Corsair was used in the filming but the door wasn't added then. It was installed in the early 80s when she was owned by the Canadian Warplane Heritage.

Brad--

Thanks for posting so many excellent shots of what was once my "local" Corsair! Having seen Mr Lane's finished work on the Gary Kohs FG, I'm very pleased indeed that the ex-CWH bird has gone to the same shop. (And of course what goes round comes round...the ex-Kohs FG will soon be my "local" Corsair...albeit 300 miles instead of 5 miles away.)

That scheme with the white (?) fin and wingtips is very sharp. Were I Mr Reynolds, I'd opt for the closest to the camera of the FGs in the formation shot...I love the "115" side code that looks exactly like that on CWH's FG!

Have long been confused about the purported use of the CWH FG in the "Black Sheep" TV series. I recall that show running from about 1977 to about 1981; CWH acquired the FG in 1974 or 75 (for $26K...time flies...) and I don't recall the aircraft leaving Mt.Hope for extended periods of filming afterward. Granted, I didn't begin "haunting" CWH until about 1976. Anyone have precise details on this FG's use, or not, in "Black Sheep" filming?

BTW, I don't think C-GCWX (as she then was) was ever subjected to a full rebuild when based at Mt.Hope. She did have the airstair fitted so a crew chief could accompany the FG on solo airshow visits...I think that may have been done at Kal Aero in Michigan but memory could be faulty.

Very interesting to hear that the wings were once fabric and had been metalized. I think that happened before the FG came to Canada. It had been widely believed hereabouts that the outer wings were off a -4; seems that was a mistaken impression (maybe because the wings had been metalized.)

S.

Some pictures from a couple of weeks ago. It's starting to come together a little at a time.

Looks like an absolutely top notch resto job. Always amazes me how strongly constructed the Corsair looks, especially the wing spar. Looks as though you could hang almost anything on it!! Although I am biased and love the old RN scheme, I think the one Brad proposed is awesome. The old saying 'If it looks right, it flies right' certainly applies to the Corsair in bucket loads in my opinion.

Uhhhhh.....it was the ale-er-rons, rudder, and effilators that where fabric. :D

Actually, the ailerons are made of wood... although I think they might be covered with fabric. The outer wings for -1's, and early -4's were fabric covered though.

Cheers,
Richard

PS. Great update Brad... feel free to post any more photos you have :)

ATTN JACK COOK!!!!!! can you post for him the pic of the corsair on the deck of a carrier that was involved in a fire. Think the wings were folded and the "Fabric" is burned away exposing the wing. He needs a lesson on corsairs.:)
