Of course they did. If I was in less of a hurry I would not have put it like I did . I think I was trying to say that a Spitfire would not have ordinarily had an anti-glare panel with the conventional camouflage schemes for which it is well known. I have a number of photos of Spitfires with such a panel but its associated with a particular scheme rather than generally to the type as its isolated precence on the model would imply

The Seafire 47 had one pretty much as standard in FAA markings

Does anyone know the reason the RAF did not use the antiglare painted on the top of the engine panel on the hoime based Spits?

Bill, the dull Dark Earth/Dark Green and later OceanGrey/Dark Green camouflage colours provided any anti-glare measures that were required on UK based Spitfires (coupled with our not so bright UK weather). Overseas, with light coloured, silver or bare metal aircraft it was a different story as related above.

...in addition, post WWII, our Royal Navy opted for glossy paint on its fighters to improve among other things saltwater durability. Even on camouflage colours the reflective glare was an issue and Seafire 47's were painted with a dull matt black anti-glare panel, as can be seen on this authentic representation on Jim Smith's machine.

That model is absolutely incredible, it's beautiful! I only wish that I could do work like that. It gives me a previously undiscovered fondness for the Spitfire. Very impressive!

Stephanie, glad to hear you like the Spitfire model. For great photos of a real one go down the forum to "Brief Invasion" from Tue. By the way,it is easy to recognize a Spit pilot, most look like a cross between Tom Cruise and George Clooney, except a little taller.
