Canso/Catalina #11093 info?

Mon Jan 29, 2007 12:11 am

Hi all,

Nerding around on the warbird registry I came across Canso CF-NJL RCAF 11093.

It says that it is owned by David T. Dorosh of Edmonton, Alberta and looking at the Transport Canada Aircraft Registry (A really cool research site) it says that Mr. Dorosh still owns it.

Does anyone have any information on this airplane and if it's still in Edmonton? Or where it is, and it's current state?

Cheers,

David

David--

CF-NJL isn't in Edmonton, no...but she does still call Canada home. She is the famous "Gananoque Ghost", parked inside the lone WWII hangar at the former BCATP relief airfield near Gananoque, Ontario. She has been there for some forty years now...still wearing most of her 1950s-vintage RCAF rescue paintjob. An amazing time capsule aircraft. Googling "Gananoque Canso" will probably lead you to a photo or two...

Cheers

David was here in Glendale about 3 weeks ago. He is a walking bible of Canso's and who has them and where. He is in his 80s and is driving around the states in his RV and visiting air museums.

Well Steve,

I couldn't find anything on google, but thank you none-the-less for the lead.

Matt,

thank you for letting me know a little more about David. He sounds like quite the enthusiast. Did he ever say what he plans to do with his Canso?

Cheers,

David

David bought the airplane surplus in the 60s, installed a couple of engines and flew it home. He has been tinkering with it ever since. We took him up on a test flight of our Canso when it was still up in Reddeer, it was his first Canso ride since he flew his. He has several spare engines and used to sell tours thru the plane, he has no plans to fly it, he bought it just to have it and as far as I know, it will go to his heirs, we did tell him we had first dibs. He used to fly them all around the world on photo and mineral surveys.

Just to add a bit more to what has already been said, 11093 was struck off RCAF charge in April 1961. Post-war, it had flown with 413 (PR) and 408 (PR) Sqns and, with the latter, it was coded MN-093. Its Canadian Vickers c/n is CV-435

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all the information.

Mike, those pictures are great. Thanks for posting that URL.

And Matt, thank you for letting me know a little more about David and his plane. You said that you took him flying in your Canso when it was still at Red Deer; would that be a Buffalo Airways? And tell me about your Canso, I'd love to hear. I'm trying desperately to acquire a Canso for my museum here at Langley Airport, but we'll see. I need to find some happy people with lots of money.

Cheers,

David

Hans Lauridsen bought the ex-buffalo airways # 703 , Canso CV-343 11047.
This particular aircraft was taken on strength (TOS) with the RCAF on 24 Feb 1944 and served until struck off strength (SOS) 26 Apr 1962. After its military service it was designated the civilian registration CF OFI. The
aircraft logged 769:35 hours with Eastern Air Command. It first served with 160 BR Sqn RCAF from its TOS date until June 1945 when 160 squadron was disbanded. During this period the aircraft flew with the designation letter "C" with standard Coastal Command colours i.e. white with upper wing and tail surfaces camouflaged slate grey and green. The next stop was 413 "Tusker" Sqn, RCAF, from April 1947 until October 1950. Given the code letters AP-W, it flew in a bare metal finish with standard red wing tip and horizontal stabs.

11047 is now at the Glendale airport, Glendale, Az
