Speaking of Movies, who is this guy? and Which Airplane?

Thu Jan 25, 2007 12:08 am

From "Empire of the Sun"

So is this fellow flying the Mustang a Wixer? Who is he and which airplane is he flying?

Edit...I answered my own question with a little Google search...Is this Ray or Mark Hanna? Still don't know which airplane it is.

This a great scene.

Thanks
Z

where was the move filmed at for the airport scenes?

That is the late Ray Hanna and it was filmed in Spain.

I think the airfield sequences were shot at Tablada AFB - could be wrong, however.

I found the plane with Google.
It is supposed to be 44-63788 (mustangsmustangs & warbirdregistry) according to this website.
There are two other Mustangs listed that participated in Empire Of The Sun.

Google also found me an older WIX topic with the answer:
Warbird Roll Call "Empire of the Sun"

The late Mark Hanna wrote a great article about the filming for us at Warbirds Worldwide. Can't recall which issue (anyone) but well worth seeking out - if you can get it.

As we speak (0700 CST) AMC is showing Empire of the Sun.

Good guess on the airfield, but Tablada is too built up around the former airfield.
I believe the location of the prision camp and Japanese Airfield was Trebujena, Cádiz, Andalucía, Spain.

When I had it on VHS, I would fast forward to 1916 on the counter and watch the airshow. Now I'm going to watch it again on DVD...

My local spotters society have made a page called archives to show visitors to our local airfield is past years.
So I can see what I've been missing the last decades :( , and I found this picture, still in Tugboat colors.

No, I afraid it's not an L-5. I forget the exact designation, but I seem to recall that it is actually a post-war Italian bird.
Anybody out there help with the ID?
