I just completed a review of the California Locator. You will remember that a few months ago I thought I had it about as well covered as it was ever going to be. I was wrong since I found a number of new sources with much good information. New entries were added, many entries were improved, many questions were answered and some new questions were raised.

#56: Is there a F-117 or F-16 displayed as part of the Blackbird Air Park in Palmdale?

The actual lat and long coordinates are preferred. The reason why is that Google maps doesn't handle street addresses well and can be quite far off the mark. Combine that with the satellite images not always being up-to-date, and even the exactly location of an aircraft carrier can be unsure.

For example you will find the Palm Springs Air Museum at... 33 49 57.81 N 116 30 18.03 W

So they are actually two separate entities which just happen to be located beside each other??? This can be confusing. I have come across a number of examples where one site is known by multiple names and the location is given as being in two different cities (the suburb and the larger centre). I'll break the one entry into two then.

Hiller Museum is not in Modesto, it's in San Carlos at the airport of the same name 37 30'44.81"N 122 15'11.66"W


It's an operational helicopter, not displayed, and requires prior permission to enter the property to photograph it, I tried last year unsuccessfully.

There is an F-4 displayed right next to the NASA Convair 990 at the main gate of Mojave Airport.

#1: Is there a F-86 in Auburn?

No. I've been up there a lot, and I've never seen one.


#20: Where exactly is the Hillier Air Museum located in Modesto?

Hiller is in San Carlos. Hiller also has a giant meat bomber kinda airplane , DC/C something, it is stationed elsewhere. Beautiful plane. I think Roger Cain knows where it lives. It can't land at San Carlos.

#29: Is there a T-33 displayed in Los Gatos? If so then my map reference needs to be improved?

I swear I just read something about this, here. The answer, I think, is yes. And it has been filled in with cement to be a kids slide. (I live within spitting distance, I should really go over and take a look)

#34: Is there a T-33 displayed in Paso Robles?

There are two. They are outside at the Estrella Warbirds Museum.

Thanks to all for the contributions. I am making changes to the Locator. I will likely upload and update tomorrow. In the mean time I have a few comments.

There are two museums that I believe may be often confused…

A) Hillier Air Museum, Modesto, www.hillierairmuseum.com, 8: Beech 17, Globe Swift, Cessna 140, N2S, PT-22, Beech 35, J-2, Seabee

B) Hiller Aviation Museum, San Carlos, www.hiller.org, 30+: Avitor, Curtiss-Pusher, XH-44, Rotorcycle, SST, 747, Condor

…these are appear to be two separate museums. Comments anyone?

There is an FJ Fury on board the USS Hornet when I was touring it Oct. 05 it looked ready for some new paint when I saw it.

I've given you the info for the San Carlos Hiller Aviation Museum, the Hillier is new to me in Modesto, I'll go visit it in the next few weeks and give you an update.

Never heard of one, and the only place would probably be at the airport, which there isn't one. I hink the "meat bomber" OP refers to might have been the Vimy that was orginally based at Novato?

It appears that 5026 left China Lake in the late 1990s to the Budd McGhee Air Park collection in nearby Inyokern. The USAFM acquired the F-86 and it was moved to Wright Patterson AFB, from here it was delivered to AMARC. 5035 left China Lake and eventually ended up at the Southern Museum of Flight, Birmingham, AL. The main fuselage was restored to display condition using the tail from another F-86F. It's original tail is what is now at AMARC.
