The F-5 is in fact an F-5B static test airframe, not a T-38.

Yes, the F-5B does look like a T-38... If you want it to look like a real F-5, hang something on it.

But more abominations...
The rare B-57A painted as a later model that saw service in Vietnam. NO B-57s with that canopy saw combat in Vietnam.
Also, the Huey is a UH-1B/C/E or other short fuselage non-USAF type. The USAF UH-1F and Ps had a different engine installation with a right side exhaust.
Someone ought to be ashamed. Too many AF bases have static planes painted in inauthentic schemes. Is it too much for the NMUSAF to put its foot down?
And often these silly schemes are done at the request of various commanders.
For awhile all the planes on the LAFB/BMTS parade ground were marked with "general star" markings....and the names of generals painted on them because the general flew them in their career. Thus the HU-16 had "Gen. Iosue" (sp?) painted on it becasue the guy flew them as a 2nd Lt.

PS.. Anyone know what happened to the XT-37 that used to be there...it had a neat clear plastic nose with a landing light. It was there in the 80s when I went through OTS at Medina.
Also, there used to be a straight wing F-84 in front of a barracks...and a F-94A/B. What happened to those?

Definitely not a T-38. Check out the square intakes and the leading edge root extensions,-- those are all pure F-5.

Interesting, though, there are several T-38 features on the jet, like the size and shape of the wheels/tires/brakes. I was under the impression that it was some kit-bashed static display of some T-38 and some F-5 pieces, but the earlier explanation that it was an early test airframe seems to be a reasonable explanation.

Reference the T-38/F-5 on display. It was a F-5B Static Test Airframe, C/N C8123. Here are a couple of shots in previous markings. The T-bird markings were in Jul 82, and the camo. markings were in Jun 95. Photos by: John R. Kerr

It might be something to do with Supersonic air flow, similar to Concordes engne intake (large slats(?) at the front)

They are just mock-ups. Apparently they were missing when the plane was recovered for display.

Thanks for posting all the Lackland photos, you seem to have shot almost everything available!

Can you confirm how many F-100s are in the Security Police Training area please? You have shots of 25770 and 31684, but they also should have 31629.
Near to this is the Logistics Training Center, which should still hold the fuselage of ex USCG HC-130B 1341, although its now in USAF colours.
C-9A 10876 should be somewhere as well (Medical Center?).

You just need to get across to the Medina Annex for the F-101, F-104, F-105 and T-38, plus some F-16s

The dodgy Huey in USAF colours is in fact Army UH-1H 65-9641. Also the C-118 marked 52-6313, is in fact ex USN 131600.
