japanese aero engines

Tue Dec 05, 2006 5:16 am

i was wondering if the army and navy had thier own designs of engines or they were just named differently

ie Ki - 43 - I Nakajima Ha - 25

vs

A6M2 Nakajima Sakae 12

while as far as i can tell they were a year plus apart as far as production dates, they have the same rated hp, are they the same engine?

if there are crossovers is there a list for relevent army vs navy codings?

any ideas on where i can find info on japanese engines full stop?

thanks

henry.

hi henry
some engines were used by both wing of the japanese forces like the sakae/ha-25
also the homare was used by both forces(it powered both the n1k and ki84).

There is a good book that explains all the different designations used by the Japanese aircraft industry,

"Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War" by Rene' J Francillon, ISBN 0-87021-313-X

It covers all aircraft, engines, weapons, etc.
