Private Harrier?

Mon Sep 06, 2004 11:07 pm

There is a Harrier AV-8A in storage just off the airport in a fenced area near Spirit of St. Louis airport. Does anyone have any details about this curiousity?
Thx

Spirit of St. Louis Harrier

Hi, Vlado.

The Harrier used to be part of a museum at Spirit. There were severe floodings in the area back in the 90s and added to a difficult financial situation, the museum had to close.

I went to photograph that Harrier back in 2002, and talked with the owner, a very nice gentleman, altough at first he was reluctant to let me in. Eventually he accepted me as non-threatening and allowed me to shoot photos and ask questions.

If I recall correctly, he was telling me that this particular Harrier had been used by McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, in the development of the USMC Harriers; it had wooden components and it is thus, non-flyable.

I have several photos of it, but alas, at home in Texas.

Saludos!

Tulio
