Looking for Photo of Fraser Nash FN20 turret

Fri Sep 29, 2006 5:14 pm

Does anyone have a good photo of a Fraser Nash FN20 rear turret, preferably a side view? I'm trying to pin down some details as to how it looked in a Vickers Wellington but at this point anything will do.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried posting your question on the Flypast Forum? They have a quite a few turret "nuts" that are in the process of restoring british turrets like the frazer-nash and may be able to help you out with photos or specs.

Hi,

I am not sure if the attached is a Fraser Nash FN-20 or a FN-121 Mark 1 turret.
Hope it helps.

The photo posted above appears to be an FN-121. The FN-20, 120, 121 series of turrets generally tend to be called FN-20's.

I found the following photo in a Lancaster book. It only identifies it as an 'Early Frazer Nash turret'. I believe it is an FN-20. Compare it to the other pic in this thread. The FN-20 doesn't have the small side windows behind the gunner. It also has the articulated armor screen. FN-20 ammo feed was also hydraulic, FN-121 was electric. I believe the FN-20 frame work was also more solid/heavy compared to FN-121. FN-121 also had Oxygen Economiser equipment, which the FN-20 appears not to have..

Hope that helps.

Hope someone else has more info!

I'm not sure if this is the turret you are looking for, but pretty cool anyway.

The last pic posted seems to be another FN-121. Nice pic though!

Simcoe,

Four-gun FN tail turret of a Wellington in the IWM Duxford collection, unrestored, and thus original. It is still attached to the Wellington rear fuselage frame, having been 'hacked off' rather than removed from the mounting.
