Hello, I currently maintain a G model that has some history, she was a lend-lease bird to the British right out of the factory between 7-21-44 to 11-44 being returned to the states and assigned Bu 32911 then struck off charge on 7-31-46 @ Nas Norfolk. I would like to find any original photo's of her in Great Britain or with the U.S. Navy. What I would also like to know is if the British "Trevelers" recieved British camoflage? Any help would help. Thanks.

Steve,

I have a couple of books with photos of Staggerwings by serial number. If you could get the me the serial number I will check it out. The only piece of info I found was that Bu 32867 thru 32936 was a batch of 70 GB-2 Travelers (which would be D models) with 49 of them going to the UK and the remaining were canceled. Hope this helps and look forward to researching more.

s/n 6897 - I have two small pictures in two of my books that show this airplane in its civilian colors in the late 60's early 70's. I'll keep diggin around for pictures of it in military service colors.

Hi Steve! If you took Eric's suggestion of checking with Tullahoma, then
you've probably already seen this photo of s/n 6688, FT467 in RN camo...
Note the difference in the size of the roundel on the fuse of the GB-2 behind FT467.
Looks like 6688 is still flying..

Is this one of the D models converted to a G by Jim Yonkin? He coverted my D to a G which was a GB-2 that had a USAAF data plate and Bu number (strange). What is the N number of your plane? I still have the data plate. I thought Gs' didn't come out until after the war.

6897 is N666TX. Took this in Breckenridge back in 1994.

Lynn the last I heard it was in where else (California). I saw it in EAA mag and think it won best classic or whatever at Osh about three or four years ago. TThink the n numbers is the same N1944B

Registration record shows as Oregon, but it could be residing in Cali. OberG, was
N1944B's s/n's 6926, 44-76081? Just rolling the dice, here...

Strange if your used to dedicated number blocks, but the GB-2 orders seem
to have been filled in a non-linear fashion. I wonder when they are noted
as ex-USAAF, if that was a paper-action which happened before the bird
left the factory?...or did it go to USN when returning & then struck-off?

And you remember correctly about the G17S being postwar..all 20 were
built in 1946, but were not all assembled that year. From the R.T. Smith
book he guesses the last were assembled in '48 or '49. So N666TX , given
its history, is a D17S(GB-2) converted to G configuration.

I am fairly sure it was a paper transaction as the data plate is Usaaf, listing type as GB-2, and giving a Bu number instead of serial. I'll dig it out and post the Bu. # shortly.

Well... think you are now mixing the two different airplanes together that we are talking about. N666TX is a D model. If you look at the picture I posted it still has the D model cowling, gear legs and tail.
