Brazilian Vengeances

Thu Sep 02, 2004 5:40 am

I asked at the LAAHS forum, and this is what Anderson Subtil and Fernando Parodi answered:

Holla Amigos;

Brasil received via Lend & Lease, 28 A-31 and 5 A-35 Vengeances. These however, were never used because were considered to be unsuitable for operational service, so they were stored until 1946. I believe that the unit that should have used them was a Dive Bombing Squadron, based at the"Base Aérea do Bacacheri" here in Curitiba.

None were preserved.

Saludos from Brasil

Anderson Subtil

Santiago,

According to the "Portal Militar" website, they served on FAB (Força Aérea Brasileira) from 1942 to 1946.

Twenty eight (28) A-31 diverted from a British order. These aircrafts got no Brazilian serials, being indentified by RAF serials, which ranged from AN561 to AN608.

Only 5 A-35s were ordered from USAAF surplus and supposedly came to Brazil delivered by 1944. These ones got FAB serials ranging from 6056 to 6060.

Both models were grounded by 1946 by the reasons pointed by Anderson.

Ten. Brig. (R/R) Nelson Freyre Lavanére-Wanderley's wrote on his book História da Força Aérea Brasileira book, "(...) for the Dive Bombing Groups, several Vultee A-35 Vengeances were delivered in Brazil, but these airplanes, after few months of service, were condemned by North-American authorities and eventually grounded, and disassembled; several Vultee Vengeances ferried to Brazil by North American pilots remained at the Airport of Caravelas along many years, and Brazilian Air Force has never took the delivery of them."

As we can see, there is a difference of versions of the same story.

In fact, we know very little about the Vengeance's career under FAB livery. I believe they were scraped after in the years following the war.

Photos of Vultee Vengeance

The actual photos for those who are interested...

Overall photo of the tank. Interesting that it was painted with such a heavy coat of Zinc Chromate

Image

Fill Neck- I imagine pouring hydraulic fluid through a small aperture like this was a bit frustrating when working on top of the airplane- it was a BIG airplane!

Image

Dent and evidence that it was mounted at some point.

Image

The real interesting photo of the data plate. Note 72 parts number prefix- 72 was the model number of the Vengeance. 63 and 74 are the parts numbers prefixes for the BT13. 32 is the parts number prefix for the B24. Good stuff to know when you are digging (literally digging) in mountains of old parts. I can't believe that bastard wants $250.00 for it. He should give it to a museum!

What about the A-20 Boston/Havocs at Wang? and the Japanese stuff...

Fri Sep 03, 2004 5:43 pm

Hi Oscar

Yes they are moving ahead I think on the Bostons/Havocs. I saw in one of the mags where the wing was being jigged etc and most of the stuff from RAAFM had arrived. The article said the Tony was being displayed on loan from Robert Grienrt - as far as I know thats all they have at present - which is a lot anyway.
