FYI - some volunteers have done a great job cleaning up and better preserving the Scorpian in the park at Nampa - I'm happy to say it looks much more respectable now! Hopefully it will end up in at our museum in the future.

I've got to see the F-86 : )

I will also go to check the F-89, and I was told that there is another -as yet unidentified- airplane in Caldwell.

FYI... here in Tulsa on the local news (channel 6) they had a story about the graffiti on the aircraft in OKC, and showed the A-26 briefly. Hopefully they are making some progress in tracking these morons down.

RickH: My favourite response to the question "How did you get this airplane here"? is usually "FedEx; they'll deliver *anything*" delivered in a deadpan tone of voice. Then I explain we flew it in, we'll fly it out, and by the way would you like a ride? :)

And Rick, thanks for mentioning that the majority of names on the Collings birds are (ahem) *historically authentic*.

Digger, I apologize if my last post came off a little testy. Here's a question for you tho: How do you feel about the owner of a given plane putting his or her name under the cockpit rail, since that's not exactly authentic? (Serious, non-trollish question)

I'd like to remind folks of a comment made by the owner of a bright red Spitfire when questioned about the inauthentic paint job.

There was a time when NONE of these aircraft carried an authentic military scheme. We've come a long way, now we only quibble over the names of a few veterans or sponsors.

You guys forgot another favorite comment of mine:
"The Confederacy really flew this airplane?"
Unfortunately, since the name change we don't hear this comment much anymore.
Our favorite answer to the "How did you get here" question is:
"No, we trucked it in, the wings are actually held on by velcro and super glue."

Absolutely agree with the Spit owner's comment.

Regarding the names on the sides of the Collings aircraft....I'd rather have sponsors recognized for their efforts in keeping a warbird flying, than have the airplane in a historically authentic paint scheme and not flying.

It is not only airshow visitors that will ask the interesting questions. One of the major papers here in ATL printed a caption about our SBD and it's role in the Civil War. :shock:

Yeah, waaaay back when FIFI was on tour (before I broke it), I used to get the "how'd you get it here" question too. My reply was, "you should have seen the size of the helicopter that we used to sling it in here!" :D

Jase, Ha! Ha! No offense taken....
I've been writing "controversial" messages on the these WW2 internet groups for 6 years now. I'm used to people not enjoying everything I write. I've had many heated arguments with people, then I meet them at Shows & We become friends.
I know the "Human Animal" alot better than I used to. I don't bother getting upset anymore, it's a waste of energy.
I have a pretty "thick skin" now & it takes alot to set Me off...

Anyway, I have NO problem at all with the Warbird Owners or Ground Crews putting thier names on the outside of the aircraft.
They're Gods to Me & they can do whatever they want. But when I see a huge group of "Unknowns" painted on the side, it's time to speak up. Enough is Enough....
By the way, I really like the portable plaque idea!!

Digger, I think I have a way to solve your problem.

Donate the required funds to one of the CF aircraft to have your name put on the aircraft and then request that your name NOT be put on the aircraft.

You will have the best of both worlds; you will have done your part to keep an historic aircraft flying and at the same time NOT deface ( in your opinion )the aircraft ! :lol:

Ok so does anybody know what is being done to get the trashed A-26 cleaned up. Will the aircraft have to be repainted, or can the vandals paint be removed with some safe chemical? I like like to catch the S.O.B.'s & paint there ass! :twisted:

Robbie from my experience the spray paint will probably clean up with MEK, lacquer thinner, or maybe just plain old mineral spirits.

Wether it will hurt the original paint depends on what it is. Most aircraft paint is pretty durable and if you are careful you might be able to just wipe off the offending paint overlay.

Tulio - Mike Brashears facility at Caldwell has all of the activitey. P-51 restoration under way, Hoolbrook Maslan's Yak reconstruction, Wildcat rebuild making progress, and Paul Allen's B-17 aft fuselage - He also did work on our F-86 as well as the wing tips, control surfaces and some other parts for our P-51C. Mike's a really nice guy and does awesome work - but... it's his business and not a museum so I would recommend an introduction to him or one of the guys who work there and arrange something instead of just popping in.

Thank you, John.

I usually don't just show to a location -unless it is an airport and there are aircraft on display, or a museum- because I understand the need to keep business separate from non-productive activities.

If you managed however, to make that connection for me, I would appreciate it.

In any case, whatever information I gather and any photos that I take and get permission to post, will be posted here.

By the way, your "No photos" warning for the F-86, did not work for me : )
