P-40N 44-7619 N1251N I believe the late Bob Downey (raced F1s in Reno) and a guy named George Mokski fixed this plane up with the canopy off of a jet of some kind. Shot at Chino???

This does look to be 44-7619. I'm usually bad with locations so, again, I'm clueless!

Some more photos of this Hawk in this configuration... or, as I call it, the 'Blackhawks' P-40.

These two images came from the web... grabbed 'em off the Usenet Replayer I think. Unfortunately I don't know where these
photos were taken or who took them.


Here's a few shots taken of 44-7619 by my Dad. I need to rescan these, as they're bad scans which I tried to clean up before I knew
what the heck I was doing in Photoshop. So they fit right in with the 'Bad/Old Photos' theme. Anyone care to guess the where
and when of these?

Nope. I was there and that P-40 was not. Assuming of course you are talking about the Wings of Eagles Air Show.

Ooh, you guys are good.

I am no good at this location guessing. Kalamazoo would be too easy but it looks like it could be.

As for the old configuration, I believe I heard somewhere that the canopy was the rear piece of a T-33 unit, put on backwards, with a custom windscreen.

The picture at the top of this thread was taken at Ontario CA (Tallmantz) and the date was Sept. 16, 1969.

Check out that yellow CTV-2 Gorgon missile in the lower right corner. This was sort of an American equivalent to the V-1 (although not a direct copy like the Loon) intended for pre-invasion softening up of Japan. It's missing the pulse jet engine which fit on top of the fuselage and fin.

The P-40 was owned by Ed Maloney at the time, and he was operating out of Ontario so I guess that makes sense!

a little 'edjmucated' guessing... oh well!

As an aside, I was doing searches for the CTV-2 to help pin down the location but found very little, unfortunately. Anyone
have any photos of this particular example?


Back to the Hawk...

That canopy... my first thought was also a T-33 hood (the registry says F-80, which it clearly is not) but I would think that
it's installed 'correctly'... that is, not backwards. The angle of the frame is right... but then I look at the curvature of the glass
and I get all mixed up!! LOL

Anyhoo, the photos of Sue Parish in her pink P-40 would probably be impossible to identify unless you were there or
were intimately familiar with the location.

Yes, I erred in saying Tallmantz before; the slide is labeled "Ont. Air Museum".

Tallmantz was then in Orange County, correct?

It is possible that Dick took some better shots of the CTV-2 that same day. I have to go check his "Rockets & Missiles" binder.

Time for Kittyhawk #3 (see new thread). People seem to like these old pics, and I'm learning a lot, so I'll post one per weekday until someone makes me stop.
