Why is does the .50 cal gunner on the American tank appear to be firing at the Thunderbolt?

An A& P mechanic friend of mine went to the show and said it was the best show he had ever seen. His disappointment at only seeing one Spitfire fly versus the advertised 6 , was replaced by seeing the 3 Hurricanes , and the two in formation. He said the fighter strafing runs over the military reenactors was incredible as was the Sturart tanks and more than 40 military vehicles. He was more excited by the re-enactment than the airshow!
Ironically a Hurricane landed , taxied, and parked in front of them and his wife noticed that there was a bent panel, under the right horizontal stabilizer area, bent at a 90 degree angle like something was sticking out of it. (??) That's when they told the pilot and I believe the Hurricane didn't fly anymore that weekend, maybe it was in the hangar.
As for Martin Caidin's JU-52; Those were the days when insurance was cheap and easy lawsuits 2) I don't think he had any insurance. 3) I believe his was a genuine Junkers built, maybe 1937 and so arguably was civil certificated, whereas the CAF's is one of the CASA models. 4) Mr. Caidin didn't have anything to sue over; 100% of everything he made went into the JU-52 and avgas, no kidding 5) He was extremely generous, he was the kind of guy if you asked for a ride, he would always say yes, he flew it as much as possible, and he thought it was impossible to wear out a JU-52. He was right!!

All three Hurricanes and both Spitfires flew on Sunday. Whereas only two Hurricanes and one Spitfire flew on Saturday (not counting the arrival of the third Hurricane and the second Spitfire around noon). I believe all three Hurricanes departed on Sunday too. At least when I left the ramp on Sunday, the only planes remaining were the two F-16s and the Caribou.

Because the USAAF is bombing whatever's moving on the ground and the tank is replying in kind!

That was fun flying in the battle. I'm glad people enjoyed it. Anybody get any pictures of the L-5 on patrol over the battle?

It was good to meet with everybody.

I heard the CAF Old Dominion guys were taking detailed "spy" photos of my OY-1. If you guys have any questions, let me know!

Sabremech, that T-2 is very cool! Thanks for letting me get a close-up look around it!

If you look in the last pic on my posting (Stuart tank w/ P-47 overhead) to the far right, you can see the L-5  Sorry thats as close as I got to it during the battle.

Paul,
Great to have you get a look at her! Really enjoyed talking to you guys and meeting the other WIX members. I'm sure we'll be in touch with you in the future as the foundations airplane assets grow.

That battle reenactment reminds me alot of the Buckley Homestead reenactmnet. At that reenactment we have a P-51, TBM, and either a PT-17 or L-2. The TBM is barely over the trees when it comes by.

So that fuselage is from the Windsor Mosquito Bomber Group, or did they just hang their banner there? Will it be a static?

Shame about the N3N wreck... Gear and floats torn off and everything!

Thu Aug 10, 2006 9:11 pm

is the N3N out of Toledo or did I just see it there a few years back?

Thu Aug 10, 2006 9:14 pm

My question about the N3N is, why are there two national insignia's on the top wing??? :?: Its a beautiful airplane!

Ju-52 Riders

Thu Aug 10, 2006 11:20 pm

<<I think you may be right when it comes to a ride program but I know Martin Caidin flew with passengers when he had his JU-52.

I believe that since the JU-52 was used as an airliner, prewar, that a standard category certificate may exist for the type. Maybe the difference is that the CAF aircraft is CASA built ?>>

I asked the pilot and crew about riders and they said it was a liability issue; no one other than the crew are permitted on board when in flight.
