Warbird Information Exchange

Seems that there is starting to be some play between Museum Foundation and NHC as we have read here. Maybe having some articles such as this published will help advance the recovery idea and show what organization, or specifically who is holding this up. I was very happy to see the article list where the restored recovered aircraft are so that people can realize who benefits from these recoveries. I am not a diver and don't think I will ever see a rusting wreck underwater. I much prefer seeing them in a museum. I also don't agree with the statement that a recovery far in the future will yield more value.

You just gotta' love Dr. Neyland's comments...

“The Navy Historical Center and its underwater archaeology people are the obstacle to the salvage of Navy aircraft, not only from Lake Michigan, but everywhere else in the world,” said Ed Ellis, the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation’s secretary and a retired Navy captain and lawyer. But Robert S. Neyland, head of the underwater archaeology branch of the Navy Historical Center, defends leaving the wrecks undisturbed.

“Those that are left are very good resources for the future,” he said. “That resource should be used in good stewardship. Think how much more important it will be to recover one in 100 years from now, or 150 years from now, once this generation has died.”


Hee hee... Yeah, in 150 years from now the recovery and display of a reddish, powdery substance that used to be an F4U-1 certainly will be a special event!

Hi all

Don't you just got to love "Robert S. Neyland" I think he is some sort of frustrated stockbroker trying to sell "Warbird Futures" Well there isn't any and he should / does know better than to say such a stupid thing

Everyone here is quite correct - at the current rate of corrosion in a few years/ decades depending of where they are most of these airframes will have the structural integrity of toothpaste - it is already too late for too many as a result of all of this and we can't even sue them for dereliction of duty as a public servant (or can we?)

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH now I feel better !!!
