A-7 in Round Lake, IL

Sat Aug 05, 2006 12:47 am

I'm on a whirlwind trip through the Midwest, and after stopping at the Volo Antique Auto Museum in Volo, IL (they have a Huey on display, will post photos soon), my friend and I made a wrong turn and passed through the village of Round Lake where I caught a glimpse of an A-7 in nice shape, wings folded, on display in front of an Amvets post. My friend didn't want to stop, so does anyone have an ID and/or a photo? Thanks!

If my memory serves me correct this A-7 was moved from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago,Il within the past 5 years or so to its current location in Round Lake. I checked the NMNA's website to see if they had a Bu # for this plane but its not on the list as being on loan.

Unfortunately, no BuNo is visible.

Home at last! Thanks for the photos - there was a BuNo on the plane, but we didn't stop :x . What they don't show is that this plane is at street level, next to a busy road - remember the trucks running into the Tulare B-17? And the roads don't freeze in Tulare!

Here are some shots of the Volo Huey:

I saw some other birds, like the two Phantoms on pylons in Cleveland and an AH-1 Cobra on another pylon at the VFW post at Eden, NY but couldn't get photos (my traveling companions were car buffs, not plane buffs!) Saddest thing was at one point we passed within 20 miles of Tullahoma, TN but I couldn't convince 'em to detour to see the Bermuda hulk...

Well Chris, you didn't miss seeing the Bermuda hulk, because it isn't there. :( But you did miss visiting a nice airport and the nice Beech Staggerwing museum that call Tullahoma home.

I was there recently and can assure you that the Navy did a good job "collecting" all the Brewster bits that were once in existance on the field. If I'm not mistaken they are now in Pensacola.

The aircraft on display at Arnold AFB are very nice. It's too bad you missed those since you were so close to Tullahoma.

Steve
