Hello,
Looking for information about a Republic P-43 that crashed in or near Tarpon Springs Florida near the Gulf of Mexico. I am looking for information regarding the exact aircraft type (YP-43, P-43, P-43A), aircraft serial number and possibly pilot, training squadron ect. If no one can provide the information, then can someone help me with whom I should contact about domestic WWII crash sites, Air Force Museum? VAC? Bill Larkins? Thank you for your help in my research.

Doesn't look like it was a YP-43... check Joe Baugher's listings for 39-704 to 39-716.

It could be P-43 41-6680, which crashed and wrecked at Drew Field, FL Sep 19, 1942

It's the only one I could conclusively see that crashed in Florida, but perhaps a little closer scrutiny might yield other results.

I would like to thank you all for the fantastic information you provided. I got just the information I was looking for. I know when I need to find something the WIX is the place to post!!!!

Actually, Dale Mabry was abandoned in the 60s in favor of another site much further West of town where they built the new airport. The site of Mabry AAF is now covered with a Community College and indutrial parks. Very little of the runways remain. If it weren't for a historical sign placed nearby by the city a few years ago, you'd never know it was there. It's even hard to detect from the air now...
