Hi all,

July 4th in DC. Trekked out to NASM Udvar-Hazy for a quick look see.

SBD and 109 from the Mall location in restoration area. Looks like 109 to get new paint. Steve Austin's NASA lifting body getting work done.

Thanks for the updates, I always enjoy browsing your website.
The history of their 109 is quite remarkable.

On aircraft being restored, are the fuel, oil, and wiring restored to original condition and connected up again or capped off and left in place?

No photos of the Shturmovik? That should also be getting close to paint. I am hoping the Lincoln-Standard should also be showing signs of coming together.

Thanks, am always wanting to see how things are going in the restoration area. There is also a whiteboard list of projects being worked on; have seldom seen this in the photos, but contains much information on the smaller projects.

Is the Anne Lindbergh Brunner-Winkle BK Bird still in the restoration area, or moved to UH-proper? Nice - and beautiful - addition to the collection.

Kevin -

The Shturmovik was curiously absent - maybe in the paint shop?

I’ve seen it in the restoration area a few times over the last 2 years - I’ll dig out photos.

The Lincoln-Standard was in the restoration shop and was coming together. Apologies for not snapping photos..

Didn’t see the BK bird either - sorry.

I'm surprised that the Smithsonian felt the need to re-restore "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby".
Of course it had to be taken apart to move it... but was it not restored 30 years ago, and displayed inside since? Hard to imagine that it had deteriorated that much.
Or are we just seeing the re-assmbly process? In any case a very welcome addition to the museum.

Fabulous on the IL-2 being moved around. The Brunner-Winkle must already be on the UH floor.

SSSB certainly does not need to be "re-restored". I have heard that this will be reassembled fairly soon, positioned near the Enola Gay, though I am sure plans are still in flux.

Looks like they are finishing up the refurbishments for the Mall displays, we should see more things being moved around pretty soon? Might be a good year to keep an eye on things. I wish they still had the cam at several locations at UH.

 Not sure what to say about this without looking like a paint Nazi. We had a debate on hyperscale that was "spirited"...but like anything, it will resolve nothing and it is what it is.

I didn't join in that discussion (too many people with far more knowledge & especially passion on the subject) but I come down on the side of the resto's tan markings are far more defined as compared to the original photos upon capture. But that's why I like Mustangs-everything is cut and dried
