With B-17G Yankee Lady now safe and sound at Madras, I put together a pictorial history of the airplane beginning in 1945 that is now up on the aerovintage website.

This is great Scott. I wanted to track the last flight today . And after I got up , I was delighted to see that YL had just lifted off five mins before, so I was able to track this last flight. I still haven’t figured out why it couldn’t complete the last 15 minutes on Monday, as there was still over 2,5 hours of day light left. My insider isn’t telling me, I’ll find out later!

I heard rumor of too much of a crosswind at Madras for an assured safe landing.

Thanks, that's one of the things I figured. The Metar online said it was 10 knots.

And my source confirms , it was the wind , combined with a runway that's not that big . Better safe than sorry.

Just thinking out loud (dangerous I know) I'll bet 50% of the landings made during WWII in theater were outside of what we today would consider as "assured safe landing" parameters. Of course there were hundreds of air frames and thousands of parts readily available.
