Notice the top drawing the aircraft is marked "YB-17", which dates it later than the photos since the "B-17" designation didn't come about until after the 299 had crashed.

The cut-away reminds me of the drawings of "Battleships of the air" proposals which were popular at the time, exemplified by the XB-15, 19 and a number of large flying boats (like the one which would eventually become the Martin JRM Mars) though the Flying Fortress lacks the bunks and wardroom usually seen on those.

Thanks for this posting Mark. Pictures of the original over wing turbo installation are quite rare. These are the first really detailed shots that I’ve seen.
