I believe this is N505MH which was with Doug Arnold at Biggin Hill for a while around 1990, first one I ever saw I think. Seem to recall Chris Bevan flew it during the Air Fair and wasn't too thrilled with its handling - presumably all well sorted now!

Yes, it is N505MH, and the footage/flight is from 2019. Unfortunately, like most of the Collings warbirds, it hasn't flown in quite a while. It is one of three airworthy P-38s with functioning turbos. Longer version: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ne8ao6oqZ90

Where is the P-38 that was formally mounted on a pole at McGuire in NJ? Is it still on the base or moved elsewhere?

Current Googlemap imagery still shows it mounted on a pole inside the base entrance - not sure how up to date that is?!:

https://www.jbmdl.jb.mil/News/Article-D ... ies-again/

It was removed from the pylon (seven years ago now...geez) maybe it was put back as the article says the refurbishment was only planned to last six months. Correct me if Im wrong, but general public cant access the base to view the plane correct?

I should imagine it's just about visible from McGuire's entrance on East Main Street if it is back on the plinth; presumably closer access would require permission. Thinks: flew past in a C172 enroute Cape May/Princeton about 20 years ago, wonder if technically I saw it! :D Could see quite a few C-17s on the ramp...

What is sad is that USED to be a flyable P-38, it was flown to McGuire and stuck on the pole.

Still there. Use google maps to go to the street view. Back up down main street to a gap in the trees, and you can see right at the P-38. The latest street view image was from Sept. 2022.

If I remember correctly it was flown in by Dave Tallichet personally.

What is most sad is that it used to be a flyable, civilian P-38 and was repurchased by the government for display. Why couldn’t they have built up a static airframe from crashed examples and trucked it there?

Because Dave Tallichet likely traded it for something he wanted more than a P-38.
