Request: Retro/Vintage schemes on modern aircraft

A U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II from the Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Fighter Wing is painted with a heritage WWII paint scheme at the Air National Guard paint facility in Sioux City, Iowa. The paint scheme is designed to replicate the look of the original P-47 Thunderbolt as it appeared during the 2nd World War. The 124th Fighter Wing conceived the idea in order to commemorate the unit’s 75th anniversary and lineage to their predecessor, the 405th Fighter Squadron.

Why not paint a C-17 in C-47 (D-Day probably) colors?

Actually, considering the conservatism of the USAF when it comes to such things (I think that soneone, somewhere is trying to live down the 1930s-40s "daring flyboy" image), I'm surprised they do it at all.
As most of you know, European air forces have seen doing special or retro schemes for decades.

This has been breaking for the past day here in our little state. Local airplane buffs are excited needless to say. That being said, I am a little curious as to why they decided to add D-Day invasion stripes and a post 1947 USAF star on the airframe instead of just trying to make a WWII scheme with the iconic lightning bolt. Still, very excited to have this bird in our area.

Here is a late model Bell 47 pretending to be an early '50s Korean War MASH H-13D/E.
If you're not familiar with the differences...extended tailboom (the extra length can be seen in the engine compartment), later style enlarged twin 60 gallon fuel tanks in place of the 29 gallon single oval unit and the easily noticed "hump" in the cabin entrance.
Not seen in this photo is the rear stabilizer.
And if you're a rivet counter, you'll see the engine is not the normally aspirated 178hp Franklin, instead being a Turbosupercharged Lycoming.

To top it off, it's easy to see the paint scheme itself is inaccurate.
