Strafing surfaced U-Boats, no doubt. The plane appears to be painted in Coastal Command colors. I wonder if that was only an experiment, or if such aircraft were ever operational?

Yes it's an experimental installation of a Vickers 40mm S gun in Coastal Command Fortress FK185, ex 41-2515, as tested at Boscombe Down.

A good Uboat could get underwater if they spotted the aircraft quickly.Having the 40mm they hoped to have holed the upper surfaces before they went under.
