All of these pics are awesome as ever, but that "Soviet Museum" is one hell of a surprise. Where was that and why doesn't it still exist?? So many treasures, and some odd markings. P40B/C and the Mustang both with meatball stars, early roundels on the Hurri and the P400...Perhaps some sort of technical institute during the war years, rather than a post-war museum??

That looks like the main gallery at Monino but I have no idea where some of those aircraft went. Not just the Western ones, the MiG-3 seems to have disappeared as well

I keep coming back to this one; something's off:

Center Brewster SB-2A Navy dive bomber

Turns out this is the Brewster XSBA-1; NACA was working on modifications to the tail surfaces in 1943 (which raises the question "Why bother?" ). The initial report is available here: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/199 ... 092866.pdf

Maybe, although the SB2A was already nearing the end of production by then (and had been pretty well rejected). Perhaps this was just a problem-solving exercise?

Any clue what's in the background with the inverted wing shape twin thing? Almost looks le they are doing some wing loading test of some sort.

Or is it an upside down wing box section?

On the bottom (upper wing surface) you can see what is called a “whiffle tree” apparatus which is used for static load testing. It evens out the forces on the wing surface so one point doesn’t get loaded more than another. This one is pulling down to simulate positive g-forces.

Here's a couple from our neck of the woods...

F4U-1D Located inside the Vought R&D Hangar, now known as Building 6 from the Avco years, and current home of the Connecticut Air & Space Center. So far this is the first image we've positively identified as being inside our hangar. The area where the Corsair sits is now the inside main shop area as a second floor mezzanine was added in the 70's / 80's.
