I probably shouldn't even post this, for fear of being flamed into oblivion, but. . .

While I am honestly and truly in awe of Gen. Yeager's achievements in aerospace, I can't say that I was in awe of him. I met him twice at aviation events. He was arrogant, self-absorbed, rude, and unkind. I quickly lost respect for the man. I will, of course, never lose respect for what he accomplished.

I'm sure some of you had much different experiences than I had. So be it.

You are not the only one who was taken aback, by having been needlessly treated unkindly.
The mans accomplishments are many and incredible.
I don't agree that this gives license to mistreat anyone.

Perhaps. Gen Yeager's personality helped him in his accomplishments. Look at Trump. You sometimes wonder how did they get where they are in life being like that. At least I do.

Guy Gibson was supposed to have been, shall we say, not very warm and fuzzy, Douglas Bader too. And it might not have been the most fun to be one of Lindbergh's kids (or wife). Perhaps that could be an aid in terms of devotion to the mission. Of course there were also leaders who were beloved for their warmth and humanity, I think I've read that Ben Davis was like that. No single recipe for success.

Okay, people are feeling free to call out Yeager on his passing.
But elsewhere in this very forum, people are saying very nice words about a guy that went out of his way to insult people to the extent he was banned from posting here.
A guy who didn't know me or my background, politics or opinions, but called me a baby killer solely because I served in the U.S. Air Force.

Okay, Yeager could be a jerk, and may not have signed some autographs, but did he do anything worse that the one-time WIX member?

I was in Wing & A Prayer between Edwards AFB & Lancaster the night he was thrown out & banned for life for living up to his reputation... which ended with everyone in the place in hysterics when the owner walked back behind the bar after *escorting* Chuck out the door & said "Who the hell does he think he is, Orville fu***** Wright?"

I flew backseat in a Mustang once. This was a long time ago, but the pilot told me on the flight that he'd flown in a formation at a big airshow with Yeager, and told Yeager to go "[bleep] himself," over the open coms. If memory serves, I think he told me he couldn't buy his own drinks for the duration of the show, because of it.

That's fair.
I, too, have been around the man twice. I've met a lot of Generals in my lifetime, some retired and many active duty from my Army days. There's an arrogance that comes with them all, but that man took it to a level that bordered on the comical.
I saw him interact with a kid dying of something (in a wheelchair hooked up too all the tubes you can hook a kid to), to the point one person I think said loud enough for him to hear, "If that was anyone else, I'd drag him (referring to Yeager of course) out back and beat the [bleep] out of him," which a few other guys openly agreed.

I'm sure some of you had much different experiences than I had.
