I came across this photo recently and thought it worth posting. PBY-5A Bu 46602, CF-FFZ, as operated by Flying Fireman, Ltd., of Sydney, BC. Seen at the Smithers, BC, airport in August 1971. This airplane is now displayed, or at least is in the collection, of the National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensecola.

I can't say I've seen many fire bombers still with the front turret.
Must have been why the Navy museum got it.

Most water bombers were ex RCAF aircraft, and they removed the front turret. If this was straight surplus from the US Navy, there is no reason for them to take the time and money needed to modify the nose. Luckily, as you said, the Navy museum managed to get one that meesed very little work to return it to service condition.

The one in Moses Lake, WA (the last PBY built) was sold surplus as a tanker but never converted, so it's very original.
It's for sale at a high price, but given its originality, might be worth it to someone who wants an authentic example.I
The owner told me it has lots of equipment that "even the one in the Navy museum didn't have."
