Very clever!

Were any F-86's highly polished while in service? Show birds, Wing commanders?

I realize modern owners have the time and money for the polish- and it helps with preservation, but it is a little off from how they would have looked in service.

Henry Spicer had a very shiny F-86F whilst at CTAF and Fred Ascani had a similarly glowing F-86H whilst at the 50th FBW. There were a number of others.

Paul's is not too far off.

Ohh ouch! Mark, I knew I could count on you for support, just thought I’d feel better as a result. Of all the unsolicited feedback I get, yours is always my fav . And you know how triggered I get about paint and markings...maybe not gear door chromate triggered, but close. You know I’m kidding. As a result of the helpful & informative input from in this thread (thanks D.C.!) and additional research, the mis-marked Sabre in question will get a significant makeover to more accurately display USAF unit colors and markings, including <trigger warning> gear and speedbrake wells, gun bays top & bottom of wings and more. My apologies in advance to modelers and DCS peeps. Sabre is in final stretch of a phase two restoration that included an engine overhaul and several hundred hours of airframe work and will fly later this year after nearly two years of work. Now add cosmetic changes.

Incidentally, this is Jabara's service record up to 1956: as you can see he came back from Korea, went through F-86D conversion at Perrin and was then stationed at Yuma with the 4750th for the entire period that the 479th had F-86Fs (late 53 to early 55):



So not there, even on TDY. However, Joe McConnell was, so I wonder if somewhere along the line people are confusing their aces?

Don’t recall where the erroneous Jabara info came from but that’ll get deleted off the canopy rail as part of the cosmetic corrections. Thanks for the original source info. Will post photos of updated paint and markings later this summer.

This forum and this thread has had the great pleasure of visits (posts) from both 'quemerford' & 'T33driver' recently as well as in the past. Such a treat to have both historic expertise and warbird ownership discussing what accurately "used to be" and what "will become" of an already pristine F-86 Sabre. It's not often that a mature conversation can be had by parties that historically tend to butt heads when discussing historic accuracy. These two guys have shown that indeed these conversations can happen with fantastic results.

Bravo guys!!! .... that was a lot of fun.

Equally Mark, your posts are most of the reason I stay on WIX. Scott too deserves a great deal of kudos for sticking with it through thick and thin. It's a great forum and I'm glad to have helped in a small way.

I've enjoyed this thread as well and think that the Sabre trimmed in green will be spectacular if that is what is in the cards. Will be looking forward to the results whatever they may be.


PS - You missed the red on the drop tank fins Mark!

Yes, 435th FBS (Fighter Bomber Squadron) green trim and unit markings are where we’re headed along with changing serial and buzz number in order to accurately represent F-86F #24950/FU-950 of the 1953-55 435th FBS era at George AFB, CA. You can see photo of that jet on page 4 of this thread. To polish or not to polish...??

I am also a big fan of Mark’s historical posts.

Thanks! If it goes unpolished, I have to wipe off conspicuous paw prints at a minimum.

Two questions Paul:

1. What's the connection to "F-86F #24950/FU-950 of the 1953-55 435th FBS era at George AFB, CA". Is this a squadron your father had ties to? Just curious. I think it's a stunning choice.

2. Where will you be putting the WIX Tramp stamp? lol

Btw I have a large collection of detailed walk-around interior/exterior photos of F-86 Sabres rolled out of production.
