I'll guarantee you it was in and around Hawaii. There's a number of photos of a sister ship to be found in Google's Life Magazine Archives. Search under "Navy in Hawaii"

It's right under the pictures - "JRS-1 in flight along Northern Coast of Molokai, T.H. July 17, 1940".

The JRS-1 doesn't look much different than when I saw it at Sliver Hill c.1990. "Ars longa, vita brevis", sure, but one would hope for some progress in thirty years. At least it's stored inside.
