Everything about this one is a mystery (to me anyway)

That's an easy one for me. That is Cook Cleland's FG-1D "Lucky Gallon" at his air strip in Willoughby , Ohio in 1946, before going to the 1946 National Air Races. NX69900. The give-away is his home-made scoop on the bottom of the cowl. He had to remove the bottom cowl flaps to make room for it. Kinda like a "home-made" F4U-4 chin scoop. Cook arrived and qualified in this cream painted Corsair and painted the Maroon trim in front of the grandstand. I found pictures in the old "Cleveland Press" archives at the Cleveland State library of them painting the trim in front of the grandstands and qualifying. Somewhere at home I have a nice shot of the front of the cowl scoop that a friend of mine took.

Beat me to it! Lucky Gallon...which, coincidentally I heard was sold not too long ago. I believe what's left consists of the the center section from nose to behind the cockpit, no rear fuselage or outer wings, but still a substantial start to a project. Would be neat to see it restored in the race scheme.

I remember talking to Walter a long time ago. He told me that the wings had damaged the rear fuselage in a wind storm and he got rid of them, and the wished he didn't. The wings, by the way, were swapped with XF2G-1 racer #94 and metalized. for #94.
