Of course, some of us would prefer to see the wreckage removed and form the basis for a restoration to airworthy.

Reading the article, it appears they were planning on “preserving” the Spitfire wreckage in place. Other sites seem to say it may be recovered and preserved.

A58-2 Is apparently Spitfire Mk.Vc ex AR523 and I hope one day someone gets the opportunity to reconstruct the plane as is now possible.

Theres not much to reuse.The dirt up there is rock hard so the Spit would have disintegrated on impact.Its not like the old days in Australia,wrecks are heritage listed now and the government comes down pretty hard..Even worse is if its come down on Aboriginal land.

Great that it’s been found, wonder how many others there are still undiscovered out in the Australian bush or have all the other missing ones been accounted for?

It’s a stain on the natural landscape. It should be removed and the terrain return it’s natural state.

Remember all you need is the MASTER DATA PLATE and they can rebuild the whole aircraft around it using a few other bits and then they can call it a restoration.

OUCH!

All Spitfires have data plates..indeed every major assembly on a Spitfire has its own data plate.

The main fuselage group, '27', has the plate riveted just below the datum longeron on the RHS of the cockpit.

This plate specifies the manufacturer's dedicated construction number. It does not however have the the Military serial on it.
